    Default New to FlightSim

Just thought I'd check in here. After many, many years of glimpsing the evolution of Flight Simulator from the early days, but always being a bit put off by all the commands I recently picked up the free MS Flight and found out how much fun flying could be. Although I enjoyed it, I wasn't sold on the current state of Flight, so I decided to jump in feet first with FSX Gold. I'm having a blast a with it. There's just so much to learn, so many places to visit and so many planes to fly, it's amazing.

Aside from flying, I'm also interested in repainting and learning more about 3d model building.

    Glad to be here.

Welcome! Glad to have you. The Painters Workshop and Aircraft Design forums will get you going in the right direction with your interests.

FSX. Ah, FSX. Hopefully it isn't installed to the default "C:\Progam Files" location on a Win 7/Vista OS.
Vista/7 User Account Control(UAC) can give you "permission" fits when trying to add to, or otherwise modify, the sim.

If it is installed to the default location, you may want to consider an un-install and re-install elsewhere.

Use only the un-install section from PMDG's FSX Un-install/Re-Install Guide.

Defrag, Reboot. Then follow the installation instructions included in Nick N’s Set up FSX and Tune it (Slightly out of date but an invaluable tool for proper FSX installation)

Once your installation itself is complete, try the Jesus Altuve Auto-Tweaker for FSX
It will baseline the sim using your input and an analysis of your system/installation.

    Above all...Enjoy!...Don

BTW, it is a good idea to read all the stickies at the top of the forums.

There is nothing wrong with an install to the default location, man I wish people would stop pushing this.

Yes, the default location is valid, but, I ain't gonna stop giving GOOD info.
Too many folks, have too many permission issues, when using the default location. Check the forums.
The workarounds for resolving permission problems with UAC can also leave your computer unprotected from miscreants for the period it is disabled. Much easier for the end user to install FSX eleswhere and be done with it...Don

Thanks for the warm welcome and all the helpful tips. It looks there there is a wealth of great info to learn from in your Designer Forums.

My partitions are set up so Windows is on C: and most other programs on other drives, so I installed FSX on my third drive, although it is in a Program Files(x86) folder. I have followed some guides and used the auto-tweaker and Nvidia Inspector, so I have it running pretty well considering my system is a few years old now, but I will read through and see if I can find some more improvements.
