Thread: First PC build

    Default First PC build

Planning on doing my first PC build and wanted some advise. Want to use the machine mainly for FSX and as a home entertainment PC to play Blu-Rays, Netflix, and Hulu on the TV. These are the components I have been looking at:

    Corsair Obsidian 650D case
    Intel i7 3770 3.4GHz
    ASUS P8V77-V LGA
GIGABYTE GTX 670 2 GB video card
PC Power and Cooling Silencer MK III 600 watt PSU
    Pioneer BD/DVD/CD writer
    Intel 320 series 40GB SSD
    WD 750 GB hard drive
    Kingston HyperX 8GB(2 x 4GB) DDR3 2400

Wanted to make sure all of these are compatible and I'm not bottle necking performance with anything, or if anything in particular is overkill. Thanks for the help!

If it were me I would have at least a 750w PSU but I'm paranoid when it come to power requirements. 40gb SSD? Not good for much but storage. Can't hardly put OS or FSX on it.
CPU: I7 2600K @ 4.7 ghz, GPU and CPU water cooled
    GPU: EVGA GTX 680 OC
    MEM: Gskill Rippjaw 1600 12800
    MB: Asus P8P67 Pro V3.1

I was just planning on putting the OS on it. Would it be wise to put FSX on it as well and get a 120GB?

Stick with that plan. Win 7 and related folders are under 20GB. Put FS and related stuff on the 750. It will be plenty fast.
    Thanks,

    Jim

If you plan to put Windows 7 on an SSD under 60GB, you'll want to move your personal folders (Documents, Music etc) to the larger drive. This isn't hard to do (I'll add a couple links later). Also make sure to install larger applications elsewhere too. I have one machine with Windows 7 on a 30GB SSD, and it occupies more than 20GB. This doesn't leave much room for anything else.

Here's a guide on moving user account folders in Windows 7.

Me, I stick to never buying less than a 120GB for the system partition. OS do not eat much, but I add photoshop CS5, tons of private pictures, and so on. I'm at 40% of full on that partition right now, filling in my favourite music, in the FLAC format, transferred from my music server, which holds about 1TB FLAC files.

For FS and games, my D:\ SSD is 180GB, and 45GB is in use as we speak. But OK I'm a very tidy guy. I keep films and other music plus backups on 64GB memory sticks, which I have many of :-)

One may ask why I do not use a 1TB HDD or such? Well I just love SSD's. They are dead quiet, and I love a silent computer.

I may go with a bigger SSD trn. How does the rest of the components look?

An i7-3770K would give you the option to overclock. Or you could save $100 by going with the i5-2500K, as I did, and overclock to 4.5Ghz. using a $30 hyper 212 cooler.
