Thread: Can FSX run faster with Core 2 QUAD processors?

Default Can FSX run faster with Core 2 QUAD processors?

I am currently running FSX with a Core2 DUO 3.0Ghz 4mb cache cpu.
I am considering upgrading to a Core2 QUAD 2.83Ghz 12mb cache HOWEVER I have read that FSX cannot utilise the extra 2 cores of the QUAD cpu.
The extra onboard cache should have an effect but I do not want to spend say $180 and only get a small increase in frame rates.
Does anyone know for sure that FSX will run noticably faster with a QUAD rather than a DUO Core2 CPU?
Also would an increase in onboard cache have a noticable increase in frame rates?
    Thanks

FSX can use the extra cores, but, not as efficiently as other multithreaded apps.
The slightly slower Q9550 will probably run FSX about the same as the C2D. Faster is usually better.
The budget FSX performance increase would be; invest in a top shelf air cooler, and overclock the E8400.
That is, IF your motherboard's BIOS has the capability. The 8400 should OC into the 3.8-4.0GHz range...Don

Thanks Don for your quick reply
Actually my system has an E6850 Core2 cpu 3.000Ghz BUT only 4Mb cache (not 6mb)
I'm not sure that my m/b allows overclocking and I have no knowledge of how to do it as I once looked into it and learnt that it's not just a matter of changing the fsb and/or multiplyer but also tweaking the voltage. Not sure if I want to try that.

I wonder what improvement I would see changing the E6850 with a E8600 (Core2 Duo 3.33Ghz with 6mb cache) - increase in cpu speed of just 10% BUT with 50% more cache. I could upgrade to the E8600 for around $30 changeover. Also (if I can overclock) the E8600 it would be even faster.

I had a E8600 and it OC'ed to 4.3Ghz with no problem. I did install a better air cooler however.
