Flight Alaska vs FSX Alaska (and FS9)

I've been very busy, took a look at the posts in this forum and noticed the Alaskan pack has been released.

It didn't seem like a quantum leap forward, so I was wondering how it compares to FSX default scenery, and does Orbx have Alaskan scenery? Peter has mentioned famous sceneries for FS9 from Holger and Alaskan Cinematic, I wonder if Peter or someone could post screenies for those also? Could people post screenies from these five sources for comparison?

Some airports in Alaska have very challenging aircraft performance requirements during meteorological IFR conditions, and require very aggressive rates of climb in order to clear nearby obstructions in their published meterological conditions IFR departure procedures. If your plane doesn't have the performance capability you might as well wait till the weather clears! Alaska has many challenges and dangers. A well known Cessna 310 charter pilot headed out into the desolate areas of Alaska and was never seen again, never found either. Other parts of Alaska are littered with crashed aircraft. On one episode of "Flying Wild Alaska", the pilot encountered bad weather, meterological instrument conditions, radioed in and asked for an IFR clearance to his destination airport. ATC had him climb, and guided him to the airport, very similar to flight simulator.

I hope my request is not too tall of an order, I'd be curious how they compare.

Well, I can say in some or most cases the mountains look better in MS Flight unless you have add-ons for FSX or FS 2009. The default mountain textures for FSX and FS 2009 are pretty bad, and MS Flight has decent ones. That noted, even in MS Flight some mountains look better than others.

All right, have another question, how about Tileproxy? Is Tileproxy the ultimate?

I tried TileProxy for a couple hours, it's definitely worth installing and is very neat. That said, it isn't the ultimate experience either. There is lots of texture load issues and res changes while flying, as well as tearing in some views worse than others. It's cool though.

I don't know if I'd say it's better, for some things it is, but others not so much. It is different and different is better sometimes (especially if you like flying around 2000+ feet real slowly). If you will be installing it, install it in Safe Mode, then reboot, it will save you a lot of headaches. Also make sure to get the config file from this site: http://www.edtruthan.com/tileproxy/tutorial/

Those instructions above are not that great but they do contain some very valuable info, I would just install in safemode, reboot your computer, and then copy the config file into the appropriate directory and it should work.

You can read that guy's directions if you wish, but he is too long winded in what ends up being a very short install, and he didn't even mention safe mode (I wasted 3 hours trying to install it before I finally just installed it in safe mode). You do need to hit F8 as your computer is booting and disable signed drivers, but you don't need to do it before installing because you need to boot into safe mode for the install.

BTW...I'm flying this tour VFR and using the Map App on my iPad...I have it in front of me on a keyboard shelf and orientate the map by just turning the iPad. As I fly down a route I just drag with a finger to move the map along or use two fingers to zoom in or out. The mapping is Google's satellite imagery and I'm finding that MS Flight is very accurate

My FSX is a new install, I'm rather new at it. If I max the mesh slider would that improve accuracy? I've been so busy haven't had time to fly FS.

I've been keeping an eye on Flight to see if the features improve.

Pete, I'm using the freeware GMap (I have the Android version). I can load a VFR flightplan created for FSX into GMap, then use it to follow my actual Flight flight in real time on the tablet's screen. If I plan carefully, I can fly the mountain passes very accurately! Such fun!!!

A little, but if you want to see better textures, try the Orbx Tasmania pack. It's free.

There are 2 full demos, one of the Pacific Northwest, and the other of Tasmania (Australia). I'm not too crazy about the PNW one as many of the textures are the same as the default FSX (or very close), but all the airports have nice textures and grass. However, the Tasmania one is more original looking.

After you do that, you can download bunches of high quality free airports from here:

Then, I would install the HDE v2 pack, it definitely makes clouds look better.

However, if you really want to see photo-realistic graphics though, then you'll have to load up Tile Proxy and mod the config to the highest settings, but it'll take forever to load if you set it to the highest settings. Sometimes I feel like it's not worth it, other times it blows me away.

I took off using his suggestions from Anchorage INTL (and used the extreme 8.5 setting instead of 6.5), and the graphics were 100% perfect as in photo-perfect, BUT, the problem was as soon as I moved just 1/2 mile or so, the textures couldn't keep up. It was crazy looking though to take off from a photo-realistic airport (once I was in the air 50 feet or so above the ground, it looked exactly perfect).

Here is a screenshot of the HDE mod (it's a free alternative to REX). I will buy REX eventually, just playing with this for now.

I take everything back I said about Tile Proxy not being the ultimate experience.
I got it tweaked and played it in 3D on a projector, and I am speechless.

I may need to go see a doctor, literally I am blown away.
