Thread: Where have you flown as a passenger or pilot in the real world?

  1. Default Where have you flown as a passenger or pilot in the real world?

I haven't been many places, nor have I flown many places either, in facet I've only flown twice, once to EGKK from KCLT (or RDU, not sure which but I think it was CLT) from a 767. I also flew from someplace to Orlando florida when I was little, too little to know where I flew from, though I think it might have been CLT again.

Be prepared for long answers. This is one topic where being an old fart has an inherent advantage.

I served 20 years in the US Navy and have landed as a passenger in military aircraft or on military orders at over 250 airports and air bases from Bandar Abbas in Iran (1973) to Beirut Lebanon (1983) - the long way around. Never closed that gap between the two to complete an around the world trip. That includes 37 traps and 26 cat shots on six carriers and helo landings on 12 other ships, including the USS Lexington.

I've flown as a civilian to 14 states - about 25 airports, and France.

I've flown/ landed as a student or pilot in Light Sport Aircraft on 27 airports in the North Texas, Southern Oklahoma, Southwest Arkansas, Northwest Louisiana area.

My experiences are minor compared to many folks on this site. Some younger than me.

As a pilot I've flown around southern Alberta and into Saskatchewan. On the passenger side I've flown to several places across Canada, the US, Mexico. The farthest away would be Auckland, New Zealand and Melbourne, Australia.

However, two of the most memorable were in Alaska and the Yukon. One was from Haines to Gustavus, AK, in a Bush Hawk XP with Mountain Flying Service (http://www.mountainflyingservice.com/). Unfortunately the weather wasn't so hot that day, or on the return flight, but it just meant we had a great view of the beaches and glaciers from ~500' as we went by. Saw lots of mountain sheep along the cliffs. The second flight was from Haines Junction, YT, to Mt. Logan and back. Being in a Cessna 205, our max altitude was ~16,000', somewhat lower than Mt. Logan's peaks. We flew with Sifton Air who have some good pictures on their site (http://www.yukonairtours.com/Photoga...er_gallery.htm).

For a very fun time, check out SkyCombat Ace in Las Vegas. They'll take you up in an Extra 330LC and let you take control. I now want an Extra 330 for myself...

Certainly can't compete with the ex-military guys here, but I'm doing pretty well I think!

USMC: 11 States, 14 Countries, USS America, and USS Nimitz. All as passenger.
1 Cat, 2 Traps; Grumman C-1 Trader "Miss America" otherwise known as "Triple Nuts".

Civvie: 47 States, 6 Countries, with 9 airports in Michigan, 1 in Canada, as PIC.

    Longest Distance: Detroit Metro(KDTW) - Tokyo Haneda(RJTT)/Narita(RJAA), ; ~5550 nm 11-13 hours.
Even in a 747 with a Piano Bar, multiple business trips = drudgery!

Longest Duration: MCAS Beaufort, S.C.(KNBC) - Capodichino, Italy(LIRN), VIA Lajes Field, Azores(LAPL); ~4600 nm ~27 hours.
    In a VMGR-252 KC-130(E?, 1974).

Most enjoyable: MCAS Beaufort, S.C.(KNBC) to NAS(MCAS) Miramar, Cal.(KNKX) with a Refuel Stop at Sheppard AFB, Tex.(KSPS).
That was my longest flight in the back seat of an F-4J. It didn't last anywhere near long enough. ...Don

Ive been in many countries in Europe and North America and the Caribbean, in many big cities, and flown in many airlines. The largest plane I flyed in was a 777-300 (or the 747-400, if it is longer), and the smallest was an Antonov AN-2. The largest airports Ive been to are Chicago OHare, Heathrow, and some othar big airports. I think my favorite route is KORD-EIDW, or KIAH-EGLL. I like every transatlantic flight.

USN 1968-1972. First cruise to the Mediterranean aboard U.S.S. Saratoga with Heavy Attack Squadron 10. 1 Cat 1 trap flying 3rd seat
EKA-3b Skywarrior. On the way from NAS Whidbey Is. to NAS Jacksonville Fla. the C-130 lost 2 engines and we had a day layover at Mt. Home AFB. Pretty Scary!

Unless the FAA changed it, I think in the USA you can fly as a pilot as young as 16.

    Ooops, should change that..
anyway I don't think many do fly before 18, in the UK you need to be 17 to apply for a license, but can go solo at 16

I was very studious, instead of going to all the islands in the Hawaiian chain like everyone else in my family, I stayed home and studied harder. Missed out on a lot. But did fly to Montana, Nevada, and California.

I do have a nice calculator however!
