Thread: Black FS 9 buildings in FSX; any fix?

Default Black FS 9 buildings in FSX; any fix?

For a lark, I went and got Nantucket Memorial Airport, a piece of FS 9 scenery (I had it in FS 9 and now they have a lower frame rate fix so I figured I would try it). It does show up but it is all mixed up with the generic buildings and the FS 9 buildings are showing up black. The question, of course, is; is there any fix for this?

I figured the answer is probably no, but I do have Free Flow Bermuda from FS 9 and it looks great. Now I am seeing that there is a free flow New England and I'm licking my lips over that. So I thought I would see if one of you scenery gurus could help me out. Thanks in advance.

Black buildings is probably due to missing textures.

Some scenery addons use default textures that may be in FS9 and not in FSX.

Also could be that the scenery is using something like the Nova texture set that you may have in FS9 and haven't put in FSX.

Without specific info as to what addon you are referring to all I can do is guess.

There is also a change in the way that FSX handles textures over FS9. This means that some FS9 objects are not drawn correctly. As I recall it relates to 'solid materials' If that is the case then AFAIK the only solution is to replace the objects. Unless that is you have access to the object source code.

    Thanks for the responses, guys.

String Bean; here is the link to the Nantucket scenery, for what good it may do. I hope that is what you were talking about.

    Thanks again fellas.

The filename you gave is for an AI flightplan and includes no scenery, unless it's from a different library than flightsim.com.

The best scenery for Nantucket in FS9 that I am aware of was created by William Shea and is a great addon. He did several smallish airports in that area and they are all nice.

I did try to load that scenery in FSX and there are issues with transparencies. The perimeter fencing and the trees really stand out as black rectangles with the objects painted on them.

Unfortunately, as Jon stated, there is no cure that I am aware of to fix the differences in how FS9 and FSX handle transparencies.

Until Mr. Shea updates the addon for FSX we have to either live with the oddities or not use his addon.

A shame really, as his work is excellent.

If you are using a different addon, I suspect you might find the same problem, unless it is simply missing textures.

It is William Shea's Nantucket. I need to work on my file linking technique, sorry about that. But you did end up with the right one.

It really is a shame, because it was a nice piece of scenery. The version I had in FS 9 was kind of a drag, frame rate wise, and I was delighted to see he made a fix for it. Hopefully, as you say, he will come out with an FSX version.

Okay, while I've got you (as it were), what do you think of the prospects of free-floating New England working? As I mentioned, I am hopeful because I have Free Flow Bermuda working perfectly in FSX. Of course, the generic Bermuda was nothing but an airport surrounded by a 20 mile long sandbar. Similar to Midway Island I guess. So I would guess that Free Flow Bermuda could just be laid down over top of what was already there. My understanding of the realities of land class, and scenery in general, is pretty rudimentary as you can probably tell. I'm going to go ahead and try it anyway, after I delete Nantucket.

Thanks for taking the time, both of you, I appreciate it.
