Thread: Why does my grass wiggle???

  1. Red face Why does my grass wiggle???

Yeah, I thought that title would grab all you 'preeverts' out there, OK, down to business ...

I'm starting this as a new thread as a few other people seem to be having the same problem as me, and no one has picked up on it in a previous post (by someone else).

I'm using the PicNic grass texture set - and very nice they are, too. The only problem with them is a pronounced 'wiggle' when aircraft are stationary on them, or beside them. The PicNic textures literally 'wiggle' back and forth slightly, above whatever textures are underneath them (tarmac, runways, etc). I'm trying not to let this annoy me too much, as the PicNic grass really does look great ... but still ... From another member's post about grass textures, I see that people have found the same effect in REx grass textures as well. So, I'm asking ... does anyone out there in FlightSim-Land know what causes this, and how to cure it, if possible?

    Many thanks!

Gentle breeze??? Er ... no ... more like a 1.5 tremor on the Richter scale. Imagine an entire field moving back and forth as one (and that's before I've had a drink!).

Hello, I don't know what causes this but I have a similar strange effect with snowfields. When I taxi on a concrete runway in Greenland the snow underneath moves very strangely. I installed some upgraded textures some time ago but I strongly believe they're for the generic buildings and not for snow.

Any explanation for these effects is welcome of course....

    Hello,

As far as I know ... in the FS2004 world .. it's the field that scrolls and in fact the plane is not moving
The phenomenon "wiggle" is certainly related to this
The airport (AFCAD) is also not moving

    Regards.

Sure this isn't texture "Shimmering" ? A product of Anitalaising. Or lay off the grass it wont wiggle so much

It is shimmering as ..max has suggested.

You need to have MipMap Filtering set to Tri and Mip Map level to 4.
    Thanks,

    Jim

Don't think so, Max & Jim. Filtering was already set for trilinear, and Level 8, with Anti-Aliasing off. I don't get the 'wiggly-jigglies' (hey, I just invented a new word!) with the default textures. The effect isn't the same as shimmering: it's more like the entire texture level jumping back and forth a couple of millimeters, and it only effects the PicNic grass textures. You don't notice it at any altitude; mostly when you're parked either on the grass or next to it. As I've said earlier, though, some people have had the same experience with REx textures.

    Thanks anyway!

You should never have mip map quality set higher than 4.
    Thanks,

    Jim

    Why is that, Jim?
