Thread: Pilot to ATC

    Default Pilot to ATC

Often when the pilot contacts the tower to indicate readiness for takeoff and so forth, the message includes:

    "with mike" or "with juliet"

    What is that all about?

    Thanks,

    Jim

Ah, disregard the above post. I found the answer in one of the other forums here on the site.

For those who might not be able to find the mentioned post, it turns out this is a means of assuring the information being referred to is the latest information available.

If the latetest update is 'uniform' then the next update will be known as 'victor' so, "with victor" indicates the information update being used is the 'victor' release.

If this is incorrect, please post correction.

    Thanks,

    Jim

Would you believe yesterday was supposed to be the big day, but thanks to Murphy's Law and the terrorists, my home airport (KBJC) lies within 10 nm of Rocky Flats a former nuclear weapons plant and has been shutdown. So I am still waiting. This has been a classic case of Murphy's Law. If it's not the terrorists, it's the weather. If it's not the weather it's the government. Aghhh!!!

On Wednesday morning I drove up to another airport which is still open and met with an FBO who said they could let me use one of their 172s for my checkride just as long as I checked out with one of their instructors first. So I spent 1 1/2 hours talking with an instructor and was just starting to preflight when the wind kicked up to around 30-40 knots and we decided that it just wasn't to be. But I did meet with the examiner last night at United Airlines Training facility in Denver and passed the oral portion of my checkride. So sometime next week I will hopefully pass the flying portion.

Oh, I did get to checkout the flight deck of one of United's full motion 747 simulators, but I didn't fly it nor was someone else flying it. We just spent a minute or two in the simulator flight deck checking it out and it was pretty neat.

Finally I guess establishing a relationship with this other FBO isn't such a bad thing (I am scheduled to fly with them today after work) as they have several aircraft which I would like to learn how to fly. My FBO only has Cessna 172s and 182s while this FBO has a Piper Cherokee, a Piper Arrow, Cessna 152s, 172s, 182s, a Turbo 210 and a couple of 310s plus they have several tail draggers. Lot's of options here.

    Happy flying ...

Well, that's the way things happen. I'm sure that you've heard all of the cliche's, "The only certainty in aviation is that you will come down." or "Time to spare, go by air." I'm sure that it will work out for you soon enough, and you've already passed the oral, that's the hard part. If you can fly the airplane well, then the actual checkride will be no sweat. Plus, it will all be worth it when you take up your first passengers, and then you'll get the ego trip like the rest of us. As you will tell your passengers, "so, how did it feel to cheat gravity and realize that the only thing between you and certain death was my skill and training?" Ahhh... don't try that on your girlfriend unless she has a sense of humor. :)

    Good Luck!

That's just the names of the people you have in the plane with you.

Just kidding!! Glad you found the answer.

Do you think the FAA will give me the call sign of N4R8J if I ever buy an airplane? :)

Examiner: Ok, now show me an emergency descent.

    Me: A what?

Examiner: Has you instructor taught you emergency descents?

Me: No, but I would think they would be......

Turns out I passed.. silly John CFIIME
