Thread: ILS Approach Issue

  1. Default ILS Approach Issue

Hi, can someone help me to solve my speed problem when I approach the runway.
I fly boings, the flaps are on, the speed is at 145
everything is going perfect until just the moment I switch the autopilot off,
as I do that the plane decides to increase altitude making me go past the run way.
Should the plain just gradually land?

    Thanks

when do you switch the auto pilot off? I'd say 145 is too fast for say a 737 when on short final with full flaps. So you're correct in knowing you have a speed problem. Try a slower speed and just before you flare go to idle power.

Do you know how to use speedbrakes? You certainly don't use them on final!

145 kts is a proper app. speed for a 737. When you switch of the autopilot you also must turn of autothrottle they are 2 seperate systems, otherwise your engines will increase thrust to maintain speed and you'll overrun the runway.

Your problem is caused by trim, not autothrottle. Read up on trim and why you MUST manually trim the aircraft before applying the autopilot

You're approach speed is gonna vary with such a big plane, it's gonna be closer to 138 or something anyhow.

approach speed is based on weight and flap settings. 145 is highly appropriate.

I'd assume you're leaving the A/T on, as disengaging the A/P doesnt automatically disengage the A/T

Sometimes I forget to pull the throttle to 0 power before disabling the autothrottle - and the plane accelerates!
