Unhappy Cant cut the mustard anymore. HELP.

I run windows XP home 32 bit using Nvidia GeForce GTX 260 896 MB graphic card, with new drivers 296.10, 3 1/4 GB memory ( max mem for XP 32 bit.

I did run a AMD Phenom 9500 X4 processor 2.2GHz.at 4.0 MB Cache, I could get 50, sometimes 70 FPS in the sky with some clouds at maybe 20,000 ft with sliders almost all maxed except for Airliners and GA's and some of the terrain sliders were only about 70/80%. I did have problems in very large airports with down to maybe 12/20 fps. Well Airports like KJFK I'd just weep and get out of there. LOL

Well I got greedy and installed the biggest Quad ( Knowing FSX hates Quads ) processor I could find that would fit my motherboard. It's an AMD Phenom II Black Edition X4 965 at 3.4GHz for each core with 8.0 MB total Cache where the other one was just 2.2GHz at 4.0 MB total Cache.

GROAN I now can only get maybe 15 FPS max and that's on the ground in a blurred field with no obstacles near ( like trees or bldgs.

I don't dare go to just a small airport with planes or no planes and the FPS are 5 maybe 8 FPS.
The default in settings are mostly all 0% for the sliders, only a couple sliders with 25 maybe 30%. I can get 25/30 FPS using default but the scenery is so blurred ( so is aircraft ) that it makes me sick ( no joke ).

The processor checks out to be good and a couple games I have ( different publishers than MS ) have VERY high graphics and this processor will beat the fool out of the game compared to the older 2.2GHz processor. No its not that the processor is bad I'm pretty sure for if it was I'd think the other games would be affected also.

I tried "search" but could not find what I think is some D/L that tweeks FSX Simulation. Can anyone point me to this fix?

    Thanks.

Rename your FSX.cfg. I use dates in the name; fsx 5-11-12.cfg so I know when that was done. Run FSX. It will create a fresh FSX.cfg.
Make a copy of that,(fsx default 5-11-12.cfg) then run Jesus Altuve Auto-Tweaker for FSX.
That should give you a very good baseline for your particular system...Don

Also refresh the shader cache. You can find plenty of advice in the forum for this.

The 965 is a better processor, but as stated you need to reset your FSX.cfg so it can rebuild it based upon the new chip. Also the 965 is quiet overclockable should do 3.8 with stock fan, and upping the NB will give a significant boost. Just browse some overclocking sites. The faster the better for FSx but each hardware change requires re tweaking.

Sorry fxsttch and the other guys whom have helped me as I guess I'm not so smart after all. I thought I knew where to find the FSX.cfg. but what I found in the FSX root folder was this:

    Then this:

I can not determine just where to find this FSX cfg.

I'm not going to move a muscle nor play FSX until I see what you people say. Hey, you're the experts and I think we ( ALL FSX players ) are grateful you people are here.

It seems as if you're looking within the FSX program folder for the cfg file and, if your system is anyhting like mine (I use Windows XP too) it won't be there.

Mostly it's to be found in

    C:\Documents and Settings\UserName\Application Data\Microsoft\FSX

and within that folder your should find the icon for the fsx.cfg file. At least I hope you do!

    Cheers

Yes and I found that by using search but I had to copy the CFG from the search box. My problem is part of this can not be found.
    C:\Documents and settings\User Name\Application Data\Microsoft\FSX

The part in red can not be found as it must be hidden ? And I do not know how to how to find hidden files. Every since this computer has come back from the shop it gets more UNfamiliar almost every keystroke I make. Sorry about the rant. I'm going to get some sleep and COOL off.

I do thank you though very much.

    Hello again

It's fairly easy to get those hidden folders to display.

Open the Control Panel and select 'Folder options' - click on the 'View' tab - then in the Advance Settings box look for the 'Hidden files and folders' icon and then check the box for 'Show hidden files and folders'.

When you then go back to C:\Documents and Settings\UserName\Application Data\Microsoft\FSX, you should find that you can now see those 'Application\Microsoft\FSX' folders.

Hope this solves it for you.

I found it Brian as I remembered ( after some good sleep ) where to get hidden files to show and I did all that was mentioned by the guys on another thread to fix my problemed computer for FSX. GUESS what? My new AMD Phenom ll 965 Black Edition X4 is SHOT out of the box. Am returning to dealer.

Since I am REALY interested in FSX more so than any of the other Sim/Games I've played would it be advisable just to install the largest single core processor I can find ?

Am planning to keep this XP OS for another two years then I'll move on to something different.

    Thanks.
