Thread: for all those with FSX "freezes"

Default for all those with FSX "freezes"

Here's a forum thread which very well may allow many of you to finally use FSX. This is for those who have had FSX stop running, "FSX not responding" errors, etc.
I have had A LOT of MAJOR problems getting FSX to run.
Freezing ("FSX not responding") has been my main problem.
After trying almost everything and being "at my wits end", Don (fxsttcb) suggested a website which finally solved my problem.
The website is http://www.venetubo.com/fsx.html (Jesus Altuve's Auto Tweaker).
Basically, this website looks at your fsx.cfg file and changes it according to what hardware you have.
It is free (they ask people to donate if they are happy with the results, but it is not required).
Of course, make a copy of your fsx.cfg file before doing the tweak. (These files are about 6 KB in size, so a person can have plenty of copies of them without making a dent in the hard drive space.)
And after getting the new fsx.cfg, make a couple of copies of that too.
Of course, one should not do any of this unless you know which folder the fsx.cfg is in and unless you know how to make folders away from your main program's files, for the copies of fsx.cfg. (Most people doing FSX do know this, but I must caution anyone who is a new to these subjects.)
NOTE: Only rebuilding your fsx.cfg file by deleting it from the default folder and having the FSX DVD rebuild (repair) it DOES NOT succeed for many people. I tried that many times.

Again, I tried everything I could think of (and I was becoming quite the expert on FSX errors) without success.
I was on the verge of just making do, "without FSX". (I have FS2004 (FS9) installed, so I was going to make do with that version.)
I would fly an aircraft for just a few minutes and the program would freeze.
    The mystery is solved.........
For those who have these program errors, it is probably because of fsx.cfg file that is wrong for your individual computer.

Jesus came out with that nice tweaker back in 2008, so it's nothing new but very helpful.

    Yes, BUT..........
I have been having MAJOR problems with "program not responding" freezes for a couple of months, and have tried to get help here at the forums.
Many have tried to help, BUT no one except Don (fsxttcb) even mentioned Jesus Altuve's Tweak of fsx.cfg files.
I think that it is now VERY important to get the word out about this. I have read many, many forum posts from others who are having this same problem, and most cannot solve this tough mystery. Many have probably given up on flying with FSX and moved on to other flight sims.
I have a really strong computer system and yet I could not even use FSX until the fsx.cfg file was tweaked.
A lot of advice in the forums was to delete the fsx.cfg file and let the FSX DVDs do a repair/rebuild of the fsx.cfg.
That may work for some, but not for me (and probably not for many, many others). Jesus Altuve's Tweak works because it takes note of a person's hardware and customizes it.
Strong computer systems, like mine, can actually be used much more fully because of this much better fsx.cfg.
Now, there's no excuse for anyone trying to help people who are having major program crashes of FSX to not urge those people to try Altuve's Auto Tweaker.

True the Jesus tweaker does a great job at getting better performance and perhaps stability as well. All those tweaks can be done manualy, but if your not a confident one with .cfg files, your better off with letting the Jesus tweaker handle it. I lot of folks will add the UIAUTOMATIONCORE.dll to their fsx folder and this helps but it didn't do much for me. The biggest thing to enhance stability for me was giving admin rights to FSX and running it in XP SP2 mode under Win7 64 premium. I still get crashes but about 1 every 20 hrs of play now. A big jump from the hourly crashes I once had. So to sum up 1. Get the Jesus cfg tweak done. 2. Get UIAUTOMATIONCORE.dll in you FSX directory. 3. Give Admin rights to FSX. 4. Run in XP SP2 mode.

I have done all of the four categories that you suggested, except for "run in XP SP2 mode". When I was practically pleading for help, for several days, no one mentioned that one. Perhaps it would have stopped or cut down on the "program not responding" errors.
Regarding the Jesus Altuve's fsx.cfg modification, it detected that I have a 4-core CPU, and it detected my video card, so it put lines in the config file to take advantage of my extra cores and the "Shader 3" capacity of the video card.

Sorry NR16020, I fly for a living and was away from the net durring your struggle. I never found that one for a couple years with hourly crashes. Found it in a youtube video. This XP SP2 mode setting was the single biggest thing to stop crashes of my system.

Although I didn't have freezing issues, I've been trying to tweak my FSX to get respectable performance without sacrificing quality. (Don't we all??)

I finally gave this Jesus tweak a shot. It helped a little, but the one sentence that stuck out to me was "Your TEXTURE_BANDWIDTH_MULT is being COMPLETELY ignored under your actual configuration, you can very well forget about it.

We suggest an ATI or NVIDIA card for improved performance, we have no recomendations for AMD Radeon HD 6700 Series cards".

Umm, ok?? I don't have the $$$ to buy a new card, so whatever. Anyway, it did recommend this external FPS limiter thingamabob, and after trying for hours to get that damn thing installed and running, (readme's in a different language with no other instructions), and locking frames at 20 while keeping them at unlimited in the sim, I noticed slightly better FPS with no blurries. So I "guess" it helped. Nothing mindblowing, however.

Thanks for the link though. After Google searching Jesus tweaks, I read nothing but positive reviews about it, so I figured why not try it and see.

    Just one man's opinion.

Searching this forum (as suggested in the sticky pinned to the top of this forum) with the key words "FSX freeze problems" would have found you the Jesus website suggestion quite readily. Please give the search function a try the next time you have FSX issues.
