Thread: NOD32 Kapersky AVG MS product?

  1. #1

Default NOD32 Kapersky AVG MS product?

Building my first really good FSX computer. Just installed W7 HP 64 bit retail. I have the Windows firewall, planning on installing spybot. I have always used AVG because I've been on a budget, but it has had some problems at times and some people say it is too sensitive to false positives?

I can't find the thread but there was a thread here I read in which everyone went with the Microsoft antivirus system, is it called "Bit Defender"? What is it called? Do I get it at the MS download center? I think it came optionally included with W8 and used it while trying W8 CP.

    What do you guys suggest?

If you want to pay for an anti-virus program, I would go with Eset NOD32. Otherwise I use Microsoft's free Security Essentials anti-virus. I think they are offering it as an optional update through Windows Update. Otherwise do a search on Microsoft's site.

Thank you very much loki I really appreciate it. I couldn't remember the name of the MS product (duh). Many of the users here go with MS Security Essentials, and in one review one of the older MS products Windows Live 1 Care actually beat NOD32, but NOD32 ("Hospital at the end of the disk" pun on a Czech hospital soap opera called "Hospital at the end of the city") in 2011 is said to detect 94% of everything. I'm so accustomed to a bad budget, and hate spending money, perhaps I'll go with the MS product and see how that works out.

I also have upgraded to the netgear N600 wireless dual band gigabit router. I've had 30 mbps broadband for some time, but was bottlenecked by a Lynksys wireless router limited to a max of 12 mbps (wired) or actually no more than 10 or 11 mbps, but since it was free out of zee trash bin didn't mind that much, but it was holding me back. Finally had the opportunity and newegg had the netgear on sale for $85 US off plus $15 coupon = about $85 US, really scored on that one! I think the netgear N600 has a built in hardware firewall which is something I've wanted for a long time. The N600 gets 300 mbps on wireless (haven't set it up yet, just turned it off for now) and gigabit wired speed which is what I really wanted. Now I'm getting at the least 19+ mbps and routinely up to 36 mbps download speed. So far my upload speed seems a little slower, I could swear I got 6 or 7 mbps upload speed before (speedtest), now I have been getting so far about 4.6 mbps.

Thank you again. I was actually a little nervous because I was installing W7 on a new fresh Black Cav 1 TB hdd, first new hdd ever for me. I've been so frugal that all of my past hdd's were actually discards that others thought were kaput. My best before that was 2 remanufactured Cav Blue 500 mb hdd's, one has linux, the other the trial version W8 CP, later will probably use it to run linux on my next FSX computer. I've thought of a use for Cav Green hdd's, C drives with linux on them which can sit idle while running Windows and FSX/FS9 on the D(/E) drive(s). I got 3 Black Cav's (1 for the Q9450, 2 for my next FSX computer) and tested all three at the same time w/ linux disk utility, to make sure they were good before the 30 day return deadline. I do my best not to mix Linux and Windows because Windows can't handle Linux file folders (movie "A few good men" --"You can't handle the truth!"), sees them as corrupt.

I downloaded absolutely everything after installing W7, the updates would have installed during the installation of W but the ethernet cable was accidentally disconnected. So now maybe the Security Essentials are there. I myself sure make a lot of type-o's. It's not easy to get the Speech Recognition program working right (needs a perfect microphone and patience), at least it spells the words right, but its' problem is that it gets the whole word(s) wrong and has to be corrected.

FSX is somewhat new to me, wonder when MS will come around and finish the real FSNext, w/ 27,000 airports, and all the NDB's and SID and STAR's you can shake a stick at (pun intended)? No offense to GTA but I think they will have to rehire the Aces.

Ramble ramble, there was a good article not long ago as a cover story in Scientific American regarding brain power. They were saying the larger the brain the more powerful to a certain extent but the slower the signal across the brain, until it reaches a point where the size makes it difficult to think fast due to the distances, for example the elephant brain. Our moderately large brains are the smartest as far as we can tell ("So long and thanks for all the fish!" --Hitch-hiker's guide to the Universe). The interesting thing was that in really large brains they develop independent processing regions. It reminded me of processor designs, smaller die is better, then to get even "bigger" multiple cores were developed. The article said that after millions of years of development, our end product human brain is just about the limit of what can be achieved, in other words we might not get any smarter, duh. I am more optimistic, and also I wonder if supplemental chips can be implanted, I've heard the aliens and Borg have been doing this for a long time..... In another SciAm article a new physics theory (1980's) from Russia makes String Theory look like Tiddly Winks, and a Nobel Laureate has said we humans may be too dumb to find or understand the final unified physics theory ("Theory of Everything"). Last word, although bee brains are extremely small, they make maximum use of them, they can navigate incredibly well, and seek out and sting us in the great outdoors, especially if wearing Bermuda shorts.

Thank you very much Don I appreciate it. Congratulations on becoming Top Gun! I never thought I would make it myself.

I'm building up my Q9450 system, and preparing for my next FSX computer. One power user w/ a top end i7 system is not getting Ivy Bridge because it is not as large of an increase in power over what he has in his i7 Sandy Bridge. Since I don't have either I'm waiting to see what's best. I'm very impressed by how reliably the Sandy Brdige can be overclocked. But waiting to see how things settle out.

Also waiting for the Ivy Brdige laptops since I won't overclock that. Have three flight training software packages waiting for the laptop, darn!

I've just about got my wishlist "Bang for the Buck" tweaked as far as I can get it. I added the i5-3570K Ivy Bridge to my Z77 list just so I could do some comparison testing. $189 at MicroCenter isn't gonna break the bank. I doubt it will challenge my primary 2700K, but, I'll have some empirical data for it and PCIe 3.0(HD 7970).

Just do a search for "i7-3610QM" the new Ivy Bridge lappies are out and they run the gamut from mild to wild...Don

That 2700 sounds good. Keep us posted on your IB findings.

Thanks Don, you're the first person who's told me that. Best Buy people don't know what either a Sandy Bridge or Ivy Bridge are. Couldn't talk to anyone at newegg. I'm really happy with newegg, they inspire confidence,

Yes, I was talking about various sizes of brains and intelligence, and the human future potential of increased intelligence. Then my mom insisted, "You, are, a ding-a-ling!" Thought that was funny.
