Thread: Object Library navigation issue

    Default Object Library navigation issue

Okay, I have an airport design, object library issue which has been driving me nuts for about two weeks! And I have the feeling that the answer is going to turn out to be a completely d'oh! Moment that is going to leave me feeling like an idiot.

I am missing some little part of the brain puzzle regarding the management of object libraries. I downloaded a library by somebody called Loney and another one by Dan French, mainly just to see how it would go working with them. It hasn't gone well.. I can't get either one to show up either in library object manager, or by secondary clicking and going add-library object. I can navigate to a selection of thumbnails by clicking the appropriate button, but I seem to have a mental block about figuring out what to do from there.

I've been getting into Google Sketch up. I navigated to their hangar selection and downloaded a hangar that looks very similar to the one which is my hearts desire. I have learned a thing or two and have made it look pretty close to what I want. I have also found model converter X, follow the directions in the tutorial, and I may have a usable file sitting there waiting for me, but I don't have the wherewithal to navigate to it.

I have the feeling that the answer is sitting right in front of me and I'm missing it, but I've been beating myself up over this for nearly 2 weeks and I'm here to give myself up and ask, abjectly, for help.

    Help.

    Thanks in advance,

    Tres

Forgive me for asking but what program is it that you are using - it sounds a bit like ADE but it could be something else....

Wow, Mr. scruffyduck himself! This is like getting Steve Jobs on the phone when you call Apple tech support (or it would have been anyway)! You'll have to take me with a grain of salt, Jon, I am a relentless kidder. But I am very grateful to get a response from you.

Yes, it is ADE. And I would estimate I am progressing to the phase of being what you would call a conscious incompetent; I can't fix the problems yet, but I at least have some idea what they are.

With generic buildings I have no problem. I can select them and drop them into projects at will. Library objects seem to be more intermittent. Sometimes a given object will pop right up, other times it won't. I'm thinking that this might be in a case where not only is the image of the object not available, but the object itself is not available. But I can't be sure. Sometimes, I will try to insert an object (always a building or a hanger in my case so far) and there will just be a dark impression in the ground. But that is another issue. Figuring out how to navigate object libraries is really where it's at right now. I have a hanger obtained in Google sketch up and it is my hearts desire to put it into an airport I am working on.

Aside from what I posted above, I'm not sure what other questions you would have, so I'll just stand by. Thanks for coming in!

I am assuming that you can place objects in ADE and they appear in the display but they may not always appear in FS? Two things to be sure of is to set the Scenery Complexity value for both ADE and FS to EXTREMELY DENSE. In ADE this is done using the drop down in the menu bar. In FS it is in the Scenery Settings. All scenery objects (generic buildings, library objects, windsocks, beacons, effects etc) have an individual setting for this value so if you add something that is set to NORMAL and ADE or FS are set to SPARSE then the object won't show up.

All development should be done with an EXTREMELY DENSE setting to ensure that all objects will display. Now there are other reasons for objects not showing up but we can try them later. The lack of a thumbnail for an object in ADE does not affect whether it gets displayed or not.

Thanks Jon. I'm in the other office today. I'll make sure about density settings (I think they're good) and I'll be back to you tomorrow.

This is it. At LGKC if that matters. Setting is for NORMAL. But ADE now crashes whenever I try to load that airport. All else in ADE seems normal.

I'm just thinking about all this.

The abortive building emplacement which is pictured was attempted days before your admonition that settings should be in EXTREMELY DENSE. I was thinking, well, they shouldn't be at EXTREMELY SPARSE but NORMAL is probably okay. Now I am thinking that, no, just what you said; EXTREMELY DENSE and only extremely dense.

So would that be what is causing there to be only an impression in the ground and what looks like some window frames showing up? This was supposed to be a brick house and it is definitely in the ADE standard object library. Would this also be why ADE crashes whenever I try to load that airport?

This doesn't get to the meat of the matter which is my need to figure out how to bring other object libraries into working with ADE, but I know I have to figure it out. Again, thanks for your help.

If there is a specifi airport that is causing ADE to crash then I assume ADE is offering to send the error log? Try again and if you get the screen to send the log then please send it to me. In the notes refer to this thread so I can tie things up. Also please email me the file causing the crash - jon AT scruffyduck DOT co DOT uk
