Thread: STAR/SIDS and overlaying this on a google map

  1. Default STAR/SIDS and overlaying this on a google map

    Hi,

I see on a regular basis planes going over my house to EGNX (I live about 8 miles away) and I wonder which SID/STAR they are flying. I can look at the plates on line but can't really distinguish which they are flying and wanted to overlay a SID or a STAR on a Google Earth/Map so I could see where exactly this is in relation to where I am.

Is there a way to do this?

If not, is there a way to find certain fixes in Google Earth / Maps?

I am looking for the following points on a Google Map:-

    UPDUK
    PIGOT
    VELAG
    EMW
    EME

Interested to hear of ways that I can do this.

    Thanks
    Mark

    Hi Mark,

Was having a look to see if I could see them in Plan-G however I could not (Although I may need to update my database!)

Anyhow, I was doing a search on Google and managed to find this - http://www.opennav.com/waypoint/UK/PIGOT

If you go on there and type in the individual waypoint names in the search box on the left, it should show you them on the google map.

Hope that is of some help to you!

So when I take a look at EMA (EGNX). I can see Waypoints near EGNX. On there I can see the town of Coalville (which is near where I live) and it shows waypoint ELVOS. Then looking west near Swadlincote I can see TNT18. EMW is close to Melbourne which is on route into EMA.

With this in mind it looks like planes coming from the south heading for 09 at EGNX (EMA) must go to ELVOS, TNT18 and then turn around for their approach?? This would appear to tie up with what I see when the planes are coming in to land, however on looking at all of the EGNX plates I can't see any of this on there???

Would this mean that ATC ask them to fly this approach as it doesn't look like a documented approach??

Happy to hear your thoughts on this as I am trying to get my head around it.

    Regards
    Mark

I don't know about the UK - but in the US if there is low traffic, ATC will often have aircraft cut across an approach corner to speed their arrival at the destination.

It depends upon traffic load, but I've been in the cockpit of a bizjet told "You are cleared direct to XXXXX" a half dozen or more times while on a STAR into the DFW airspace. Going direct to the waypoint cuts across the area northeast of Dallas and avoids a turn at the BYP VOR.
