Thread: Preview DirectX 10 on/off issue

  1. Default Preview DirectX 10 on/off issue

I just started with FSX one week ago and this looks like fascinating world. A lot of information is available, maybe even so much, that it feels like a flood of information. Anyway, I have not found solution to my problem with graphic settings and “Preview DirectX 10” (PDX10) on or off.

    1) When I have checked PDX10 I can see all textures but terrain and especially water textures are blinking. I mean that some pixels are turning on and of all the time. Is there any setting which could deal with that?

    2) Another issue with PDX10 is that my main monitor will jump to the secondary monitor. I’m using two monitors: larger one for cockpit and smaller one for Garmin, ATC and so on. When it is unchecked I can use two monitors without any problems. This feels very weird…

    3) One possibility would be to play PDX10 unchecked. I have noticed that the most setup guides suggest that. It would be fine with me but then I have a problem with textures. Some distant textures are not drawn correctly and some parts of forest are only in light blue color. What is the problem with that?

I have attached images with PDX10 checked and unchecked. My system is the following:

    - Intel Core i7 870 2.93GHz
    - GeForce GTX 460 2 GB
    - RAM 4 GB
    - W7 64 bit

It would be great to get some assistance to my problems, thank you!

Preview DirectX 10 is exactly what it's name implies. A Preview. It is not fully functional, so, it does have issues.
The second shot, Preview DirectX 10 off, is the kind of thing I see when I am too aggressive with the sliders.

FSX needs a proper set-up during and after installation for best results initially and later when add-ons are installed.

Start here: NickN’s Set up FSX and Tune it (Slightly out of date but an invaluable tool for proper FSX installation)

Use the free, and easy, Jesus Altuve Auto-Tweaker for FSX. Using your input and a simple analysis of your system, it will give you a good baseline FSX.cfg to work from.

    FSX.cfg location: {C:\Users\User Name\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\FSX}
If you haven't yet--> Start/Control Panel/Folder Options/View tab, under Hidden Files and Folders check show. That will make all of the *.cfgs etc. visible.

Switching between DX10 preview and DX9 can have unintended display anomalies. Rebuilding the FSX shader cache when you switch may help resolve these problems.

Once you have a clean shader cache for the version of DX you wish to use for FSX, leave it. I recommend DX9 like the above suggestion. Most FSX users find they have less compatibility/graphical problems using DX9.

Why? Oh, why do I always forget that? After trying the DX10 Preview those many moons ago, it bit me, so, you'd think I would remember......Don

Thanks for help, after reading of NickN’s instructions I decided to reinstall FSX. Then it worked Ok, but I went through NickN’s steps (it took time…) and Jesus auto tweaker. Now game works fine without PDX10 checked and I’m totally happy with that. Now I will do some flying and maybe I will try further tweaks later on. I think the reason for terrain textures problem was that I had messed up with fsx.cfg setups. Thanks for all!!!
