Thread: nVidia GTX 460 question

  1. #1

    Default nVidia GTX 460 question

The GTX 460s come in two flavors: 192 bit and 256 bit. How much performance loss, if any, running FS9 90%of the time, could I expect with 192 bit as opposed to 256 bit? The 256 bits cards are getting scarce. I'm on a tight budget, otherwise I'll seriously consider a GTX 560 non ti card.

    Thanks in advance,

    Bob

Running FS9 I doubt you would see any difference. FSX with a CPU in the 4+GHz realm might show it. noell has some experience with the GTX 460 maybe he'll chime in...Don

The 460 I was once using for FSX was the 256-bit model and it was (and still is) a great card for FSX.
    As for 256 versus 192, g
aming benchmarks show the 256 bit having a slight edge (about 5% on average) over the 192 bit model.
In FSX, I doubt you would see any difference between the two unless running at a resolution setting greater than 1920 with AA greater than 8X.

Thank you, Gentlemen, for your thoughts. I was thinking along those lines, too, but I wanted more input. My CPU is, or will be when the upgrade is finished, an AMD Phenom II X4 970 @ 3.5 ghz. I plan a moderate overclock to near 4 ghz. So, it appears I'll be just fine with the 192 bit 460. My current rig is almost 8 years old with an Athlon 64 3200+ ClawHammer, so with the expected increase in performance, fretting over a mere 64 bits was a waste of time.

I can't wait to have everything together and enjoying flight sim again.

    Thank you again,

    Bob
