nothing less than a 560...
No video card is going to give increased frame rates compared to a high speed CPU. A 580 would be as good as it gets. you can spend an extra 200.00 on a 680 but there is absolutly no proof of any performance increase. For the money, a 570 is very good!

Hello !
Well, I'm still using a Core 2 @ 3.00 GHz and a GeForce 8800GT. With the latests video drivers, a good operating system, good sceneries, and reasonable settings, you get very nice graphics and high frame rates.
If you want settings like HDR, a high resolution monitor and high AA & AF settings, or multiple monitors, then a high end GPU with PCI Express 3 like the GTX 680 is probably a very good choice.
X-Plane is not FSX. Rendering settings like HDR or highly detailed clouds will only use the GPU:

I have a 6970. With everything maxed I'm getting 9FPS. will X-plane see any benefit from a crossfire configuration?

Your settings are bad. How to get high FPS is explained here, and it will cost you only a few minutes:

The official answer is no:

But a user was able to improve AA & AF with a SLI configuration:
