Thread: Upgrading a monitor

    Default Upgrading a monitor

I am now using a 6 year old 22inch HP monitor. The max resolution is 1680x 1050 which is what I use.
New monitors are rated at 1920 x 1080, would I notice much difference when the max resolution in FSX is 1680 x 1050 ?
As 25 or 26 inch HD TV's cost less than a 24 inch monitor, how does a HDTV work on a computer ?
I am using a GTX 560ti which has a HDMI output for a cable to TV connection.
One reason I am asking about this is that I have the Carenado Cessna C377H which is one of what they call their HD models, they say the gauges use HD textures, 2048 x 2048.
using my 1680 x 1050 resolution in fsx, the gauges are not as clear as non HD textures, would going to a 1920 x 1050 resolution help any?
    Thank you for any ideas.

The max resolution FSX displays is for your system, not a limit of the program. FSX is just listing the recommended resolutions the system has for your monitor. With a higher resolution monitor, FSX will list the additional resolutions.

If the HD TVs are 1080p models, they will provide the exact same resolution as an LCD monitor with a native resolution of 1920x1080. Some 24", and many 27"+, monitor support higher resolutions starting at 1920x1200. One point to keep in mind is that TVs are designed to be used from farther away, while LCD monitors are designed to be viewed from a couple of feet. When sitting a couple of feet away from a larger HD TV, such as 30" or more, you are going to be able to see the individual pixels on the screen. This is partly why larger LCD monitors have higher resolutions.

So the only real advantage to getting a HDTV over a computer monitor of around 25 inches is the HDTV would most likely be cheaper.
Looking at it from an investment for the next 5 years or so, and maybe even from a health point of view for your eyes, it would be better to pay a little more and get something that was made to be used with a computer?
Thanks for the explanation of the highest resolution listed in FSX being set by the monitor.
Going back to one of my original questions, have you noticed an improvement going from 1680 x 1050 to 1920 x 1080 ?
    Thanks Loki

At 24-26", there probably isn't going to be much difference between an HD TV and a monitor. The best way to tell would be to go a store like Best Buy and check them out in person. Make sure to stand as close to the TV as you will be sitting if you had it at home. Many stores have rooms for checking out TVs where you are encouraged to stand or sit further away.

24" monitors can be quite cheap these days. Even 27" models can be relatively inexpensive.

If you are willing to spend a bit more, there are some nice looking high resolution monitors coming out.

In games and sims I find the higher resolution does help the images look sharper, and it can reduce the need for anti-aliasing. It isn't a huge difference from 1680x1050 though. The main reason I like larger screens with higher resolutions is for work and other tasks.

Thanks, I just got off the Newegg website, The Asus models seem to be popular, seems if you have a problem, they will even ship you a new one without waiting to get the one you want to return.
I just built this computer, have been buying some payware scenery and planes now that I have a computer that will run them and now I'm thinking of a bigger monitor/ HDTV, Why did I have to pick
Flightsimming as a hobby? There must be cheaper things to do with your spare time.
