Thread: Shimmering problems

    Default Shimmering problems

Anyone have any new thoughts on how to reduce shimmering. I recently purchased some asian airports. One from Armi, One from Onet and a bunch from Overland (Japanese Airports) and the shimmering is rediculous to the point where its really not fun to fly there. I tried to contact Overland and although they try to help I think there is a communication problem. I think this something to do with mip files or somesuch. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Let me also add before I get accused of not searching the library which I did. I have tried various other suggestions to no avail. I tried going back to look on my settings for my video card thorugh Inspector I did not see anything for mipmapping so if anyone can help me here that would be great. There is always the problem when setting adjustments that you may help one and lose another. Like in the case of the blurries versus shimmering. My problem also is not universal, just with these airports. My others FSDT FlyTampa UK2000 (some but not enough to worry) Imagine sim Thai Creations etc no worries, Just with Armi (no support) Onet (still waiting for resonse) and Overland (I cant really undertsand their responses). Thanks again for any suggestions.

Some more info.....I added the new up to date driver version GeForce 295.73WHQL Is anyone working with this as well? Also I checked my anti aliasing setting and its set at 8XS [Combined: 1X2 SS + 4x MS], any other setting suggestions?

To stop shimmering across the whole sim, make sure the Filtering option at bottom left DOESN'T read 'None'.
    I use the 'Anisotropic' setting.
But even so, there are some high-density 3D graphics areas in my VFR GenX scenery that seemingly can't be stopped shimmering, notably trees in cathedral grounds etc.

I did not have good luck with the 295 video drivers. I rolled back to the 275.33 and the problems went away. Updating video drivers is really unnecessary unless it is to aid the latest video cards. Very seldom will you really gain anything of significance. I have a GT530 card.

Seeing this is with FS 2004 there is no Anisotropic setting, so make sure yours is set to Trilinear. Also the Mip Map slider should be set to 4 or less.
    Thanks,

If your other sceneries are OK - and only these are an issue - maybe they need to be re-mipped... When I run across scenery that shimmers - I normally run the Textures directory for the scenery in question through "ConVimX" (freeware) - convert to DXT3 with Mipmaps - seems to work best... It usually vastly reduces the shimmer or "moire effect"...

Incidentally my screenshot above is FSX, maybe the graphics sliders and boxes are slightly different for FS2004

Hey guys ... forgive me for possibly spamming but i am just relived to have resolved my issue with mip maps. IM NOT SURE IF YOU HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM AS I HAD WITH MIP MAP and i have an ATI card FYI b4 we proceed. what i did was leaving everything in the FS2004 display properties to your liking ( mine was set to full on all levels including anti alias and mip map to 8 ( used to give me dancing terrain pixels / flickering issues ) ... went to my ATI Catalyst Control Center and set 3D Application Settings to the FF:

Anti Alias: 2x Box: 2x Samples i believe you can make it higher
    Anisotrophic Filtering: 16x ( Full )
Catalyst AI: Advance ( Full )
Mip Map Detail: High Quality ( Full )
Adaptive Anti Aliasing: ( Full )
    Tripple Buffering: Checked

I dont know which one did it but my problem is gone now... no more flickering pixels. all terrain near and far are stable and they NEVER HAVE to sacrifice blurry in exchange for MIP MAP cause my mip map is set to full both in game and in the catalyst. i dont know how to do it on NVIDIA cards cause i dont use one anymore.

my PC specs is very very old but i still play with no lag !
