Thread: Maule Tak-off Run

    Default Maule Tak-off Run

Sorry if this has already been covered. I am not able to control the Maule during a takeoff run. I am using the mouse control. I have checked the box to minimize prop effects. The plane turns to the left very soon after starting the run. I know in real life I would be kicking the rudder to hold it straight but I assume that autorudder is effective. So if I try to straighten the run by moving the 'stick' it sometimes works but as soon as I 'unstick' I am turning hard right due to the aileron position and this is very nasty.

Trying to manage the rudder with the keys is not practical for me....ends up all over the place again..

BTW something simiular happens with a joystick.

Is it me - am I missing something or is there an issue with the plane's flight model that I need to report?

Jon, there is no "autorudder" in Flight. Seriously...

I find it to be the most challenging of the planes. I haven't tried the Mustang for a takeoff, it's a Hangar Queen for me.

With a joystick and full realism I have had quite a few "let's go back and try again" moments with the Maule. Generally what will work for me is to apply enough throttle to get it moving, while making very soft and short corrections to keep it headed in the right direction, kinda. As I get moving the next step is getting fast enough to bring the tail up, again with a little more throttle and making soft rudder corrections. Once the tail is up I can start applying enough throttle to get airborne, though it may not look very pretty! Short fields and their trees can be avoided in most cases.

Using a mouse and keyboard without any of the assists turned on could be dangerous to your health and for any passengers foolish enough to fly with you!

Thanks guys. My most successful attempts follow the put power on slowly method. Opening the throttle full just results in a quick death!. At least it is not just me.....

Which is how it's done in the real world.

If we are not careful, Flight will make us all better pilots.

You're not alone, I got the Landru reference prior to your explanation! I guess that makes us both old. Or wise. Or something like that. What were we talking about?

Are you making sure there's no wind? I had a similar experience with the Maule and it turned out that I was trying to take off in 19 knot winds.... try taking off (weather settings) in good weather conditions and see what happens.

Using a separate rudder control (twist stick) I now have no problems keeping the Maule straight with the rudder.
