Thread: AI Traffic behind you on ils approch!

  1. Post AI Traffic behind you on ils approch!

    Hello all,

Just want to let everyone know that if you are on a approch to an airport (ILS) and you are number one to land here is how you can beat the AI behind you:

Keep your speed at 250knts not lower until glide path comes alive
When glide path is alive reduce speed to final approch speed.

If you do this the AI traffic will do a go around.

This is only if you have no one infront of you.

    Happy landings!

Or use AI Smooth and not have to worry about any of this.
    Thanks,

    Jim

Jim, I use AI smooth, but I still have issues with AI being very close to me on approach, sometimes even having mid-air collisions. I believe I followed the tutorials on how to set up AI smooth and AI separation, but I have always had issues. Can you check your AI smooth settings and see if mine are the same as yours. Here are my settings in order going down the list:

    5.000000, 5.000000, 1, 0, 1, checked, unchecked, 1000.000000, 3.000000, 0, 1000, 5, 50, unchecked, checked, unchecked. thx

p.s. no need to call me Capt folks, Capt Flappers is just a name my wife teases me with because of my flight sim obsession.

Yours are close to default or are the default. Mine are tweaked.
    Thanks,

    Jim

Those tweaked settings never ever gave you any AI to interfere with your landing?

The ILS GS cannot lock unless the IAS is at 180 knots or less.... I wonder how you get your glide path to hold the ILS GS at that speed (250knts). Besides, at 27nm out toward the runway; that is when you catch the ILS freq, thus your glide path comes alive, you should be below 10,000 feet asl. At 10 thousand feet altitude, according to FAA rules, your IAS must be 180 Knots or less, not mentioning prop planes.

In AISmooth, the Respond To User Aircraft setting separates ai from you otherwise your aircraft is not recognized by AIS.

Usually within airport traffic pattern limitations the maximum IAS is 210 knots unless granted relief by a controller. Roughly this is around a 30 nm radius of the runways average center spot. Speed should be decreased to meet your flaps schedule for a stable approach at the outer marker or FAF (final approach fix as noted by a cross on the vertical profile of an IAP chart usually about 7 nm out from the threshold) where your aircraft 'owns' approach and you get your first landing clearance at which point your aircraft gets priority.

You can keep up your speed but slowing down and not employ final flaps and gear down and final speed until about 2 miles out so it expedites the landing flow and you have enough distance to the threshold for a go-around if things go wrong. In IFR you would deploy your slowest speed and gear down and final flaps setting farther out if you are landing near IFR minimums. Pilot's choice after the FAF.
