    Default Using Runways as Taxiway.

I regularly fly out of my local airport in Sudbury (CYSB) and most of the time I get directed to either runway 4 or 30, which have proper taxiways to get to the departure point, at least for the Beach Barron 58, which I use most of the time.
But earlier today, I was directed to runway 12, to which there is only 1 entry point which is near the oppisite end (Rwy 30). ATC directs to use taxiway B A rwy12.
What I would like to know is what would be the RW proceedure, stop at the RWY12/30 hold point then request clearence for take off, at which point you would have to taxi all the way to the begining of RWY 12 and take off, or would I taxi all the way to doen rwy 12 as directed by ATC, and pull in to the appron located beside the bigining of rwy 12, then request clearence for take off?
By the way, the same would apply if required to take off from RWY 22, exept in this case I would need to use part of rwy 30 as tasiway also.

In the real world, I wouldn't request permission for take-off to enter that runway since it's being used as a taxiway. I would simply enter the runway (Look towards final to make sure no one is coming in) and once down the end, taxi into position and hold by whatever means, either going off the side to an adjacent ramp or turning a tight radius turn. Once in position, I would call it in as "In position and ready for takeoff".

    Thank you for youer response.
I am guessing that this situation only happens at the smaller airports where there is not much traffic.

Normally if such a thing was to occur in real life the controller would probably ask that you "Taxi Rwy 12 via B A Rwy12, Hold short Rwy 12" and when you get the the hold short point he'd call for you to continue taxi, but this depends on a variety of things such as how far the taxi is from your parking area and the current traffic in or expected in the pattern.

CYSB Sudbury , Ontario is uncontrolled. It has a Mandatory frequency 125.500 (MF 7nm). There is no tower there, just have have to report your intentions and look for traffic.

In some smaller airports, aircraft that exceed a certain wingspan are taxied on runways because of obstacle clearance issues or taxi width/turning radius issues.

Royalone is correct, as CYSB doesn't have a tower, all you have to do is announce intentions on CTAF. If it were a towered airport, the controller would clear you for takeoff on runway 12, "back taxi is at pilot's discretion." Even though the runways are crossing, he wouldn't give you a takeoff clearance when there would be a traffic conflict with an aircraft using 4-22.

My flight instructor would come at me with a baseball bat if I ever entered a runway without stopping at the hold short and asking clearance to enter the runway, or announcing that I was entering the runway at an uncontrolled field.

I've had to back taxi down a runway to the takeoff end both at an uncontrolled airport, and at a towered airport around Dallas. In both cases, I stopped and announced my intention to enter the runway. I have had the tower tell me to taxi to the runway end, and hold in the turnaround pad for another aircraft to land.

Twas a bit nervous about that one til I got to the end and say I could be almost 100 feet from the runway, and well before the displaced threshold. I even got told to line up and wait after the inbound aircraft passed me.

The FAA in recent years is very touchy about proper ground control procedures. Whenever you cross or back taxi a runway you have all of your lights on, everything you have for maximum visibility. I watched a great Gulfstream 5 cockpit video where the ground control told them to back taxi to the end of the runway, fun video. I would be extra cautious, I think I would notify ground that I was entering the runway to back taxi (with all lights on), then turn around at the end and hold short of the runway at the hold point and announce that you are holding short of runway such and such.

An added precaution is, have the airport plate in front of you and note the runway heading, before taking off confirm that your heading is the same as your assigned runway.

There have been very bad tragic accidents on runways due to ground control mistakes, so you have to be extra cautious.
