    Default death knell for flightsim.com

am sorry for u nels. just as our sun will flare up into a red giant then disintigrate into a white dwarf, flightsim.com is going to flare up with traffic from the introduction of the disastrously conceived "flight", then disintigrate slowly into an ever dwindling core of never-say-die flightsimmers from previous versions, till it is the merest shadow of its former self. just as our sun will run out of fuel for fusion, this site will run out of advertisements for addons (and dwindling revenue offered or paid from same), and suffer from shrinking interest in a product no longer driven by future interest in a flight simulator, (rather than an arcade game), or by participation from third party developers. u have been cut out of the loop, and deemed obsolete (see also the reminder of my two year old prediction in this thread http://www.flightsim.com/vbfs/showth...itial-thoughts ). as have we all. your "this has happened with every new version" comments have long since failed to fool anybody who thinks. such comments (other than the most general complaints) did NOT run rampant about versions previous to fs10. no version before fs10 required multiple service packs to make it work anything near properly, or was advertised with such fantastic lies told about it. but at least, as half-finished and clusterfouled an abortion of a product it was, at least fs10 could still be called a flight simulator. and look at what it's degenerated into. nobody goes anywhere but orbx, because it wont work worth a damn around a city. not even going on 4 years later.

now even that vestige of hope is gone. ive had numerous jobs yanked out from under me in my life, including my professional flying career, and i do sympathize. but NOT to the point of sanctioning you hoodwinking your members as to the fact that its all but over. you already know everything ive said, or else youre in the worst and most sef-destructive kind of denial. encouraging people to participate in this latest scam from m$ is unconscionable. you need to do the honorable thing and fall on your sword. promote more worthwile products and get them to advertise more. besides, thats not only the only the only honorable thing to do, its also the only possible way to save your site.

it will be interesting to see if this thread, or my membership, still exist tomorrow. but as ive already said, (http://www.flightsim.com/vbfs/showth...t=before+i+die), that's not important anymore either.

Cheer up, the Earth won't be scorched to a briquette for another 5 billion years! Besides in 1 billion years all water on Earth will already have evaporated into space, also in 1 billion years the Andromeda galaxy will be colliding with the Milky Way, causing one or more of the following, our Solar system flung out into deep space so we have fewer stars in the night sky; a wave of radiation fries us; it's unlikley but remotely possible we smack like a bug into another object; or more likely we discover the Borg.... Before that however, it's likely we'll get smacked by an asteroid or comet ruining an otherwise VFR day! In the meantime we should eat drink and be merry at the Restaurant at the end of the Universe.

Don't lose hope, it's not over until the fat lady sings.

George Harrison must have been having a bad day when he wrote this:

Actually whilst not quite as despairing as the OP ,I too have wondered about the whole sim industry ,and sites like FSCom/Avsim etc It must be quite worrying for people who earn there livings supporting this hobby.(as well as the volunteers who run these and other sim sites) and I fear stagnation setting in.
FLIGHT doesn't 'appear' to be what we were hoping for (note i say appear) and have been used to.
I am waiting before downloading to see how it pans ,and what exactly it is and who it is going to cater for in the future.
Is FLIGHT precious life blood ,or the beginning of the end for traditional sim fans and the whole simming world we know and love.

    Anyways

The answer to all this is straight forward:

do you like your favorites flight simulation sites to stay online - and keep maintaining the files library??

Do you like freeware and third parties - INDEPENDENTLY designed Addons ??

Do you like to have a simulator full of addons - some free some payware - as you pleased ??

If your answer to all these questions above is Yes - It is time to start supporting - others simulators available on the market !! which also offer an sdk and they are open platforms !

    easy !!

Frankly as disappointing to real simmers that Flight has proven to be, I expect a renewed interest in their favorite sim.
Along with that, the folks that try Flight then find out that FS9/FSX offers a hundredfold the immersion factor, I think sites like this will see a population boom.

I put $50 aside for Flight's DLC, but, after seeing the prices, and knowing it's realism isn't close, I'll put that $50 towards FSX. I'll be here for the duration...Don

Why not continue with FS9 or FSX?

yes offcourse - you can - but there is a but -

those simulators are now not supported anylonger by the manufacturers - therefore will die as time goes by - exactly as they did fs98 - fs2000 - 2002 - their time is upon them - therefore not a good investment if you are looking forward to support the future of flight simulation.

Those who are working to develop flight simulators platforms need your support to keep going - and i rather support those kinds of project than an arcade style operetta !

But they weren't supported (for what that's worth) before Flight was released so what's changed?

Heck Win32 applications weren't suppose to be allowed on Windows 8. Only a matter of time before MS finds an excuse to yank the .dll's rendering FSX and a lot of other non compliant software useless. So I'd invest knowing everything you own might not work in 5 years.

When one of those becomes competition for a well equipped FSX, most of us may migrate.
Even with an aging FSX we still are expanding it's limits. Developers are cranking out new enhancements that were only in our dreams a year ago.
Accu-Feel from A2A is a notable latecomer. ORBx/FTX people flow is incredible. The aircraft from pay and free developers are becoming more capable, daily.
After all of the money invested so far, why would I change, rather than further enhance what I have already created to suit me?...Don
