I agree, for the most part.
If this was my product line, I would've released a DLC pack simultaneously on product launch day that offered airliner simulation type stuff. They could've marketed as a very serious addon to a title that offered 'something for kids'. That would've saved face and made the community happy. Heck, even a bundling of existing airliners and airports with some 'career' software would be cool.
Then again, I'm not a member of their team. Who knows exactly what their plan is. They've said it several times in interviews and public releases, but the thought process behind it is unclear. I'm assuming they know more about software than I do.
