Thread: Help on Landing in FSX?

  1. Question Help on Landing in FSX?

Hi, I am new to this forum and to FSX in general Can someone point me to a GOOD BEGINNERS tutorial on how to land in FSX? I can get the plane to the airport, but can never seem to get it alligned with the runway. All the things on the GPS are really making my head hurt! Someone please help this FSX noob out I ust keyboard and mouse by the way.

I would suggest flying the beginning tutorials in the Mission area for getting the basics down pat. Taking off and flying circuits(crosswind, downwind, base...) around the airport then landing again are always good practice. I would also suggest getting a joystick, I have been flying for quite awhile and don't think I could land a plane with just the keyboard. Enjoy, it's alot of fun.

The Lessons area of the Learning Center is a good place to get a tutorial. It will walk you through what you need to know.

++. If you insist on using a keyboard and mouse to fly. There will be game right up your alley in a couple day!

The tutorials and lessons in FSX are pretty good. I agree that you have to get a joystick. Yoke and pedals are even better, IMO. Learn using the Cessna or other smaller plane. Don't try to fly the 737 until you are aces in the 172! And yes, practice, practice, practice. I have been flightsimming since FS98, having completed thousands of landings, and I still need more practice.

Anyway regardless of whether a newcomer flies with joystick or keyboard two useful tips i'd give him are-
1- Don't bother with GPS and glideslope stuff, just fly from external view so you get a better overall situational awareness and can see how the plane sits in the air. (You can't tell much when flying from the cockpit)
2- In the aircraft Realism settings click the 'Ignore crashes and damage' button so you won't prang if you hit the ground too hard, you'll just bounce.
Later when you've gained experience you can click the button off again and drag that 'Crash tolerance' slider, I keep it at halfway like below which means I can hit the ground fairly hard, but not too hard or the plane will get broke-

I would advise against both of these crutches. How on earth are you going to be able to learn to do it properly like that? Hell, why not just play Space Invaders, you'll learn just as much about flight.

Regard the "crutches" as an instructor helping you along.
Later when you've become good enough, say "on yer bike mate" and boot him out and ratchet up the difficulty settings..
