Thread: FPS Limiter

  1. Default FPS Limiter

I have been advised that it could help my performane by downloading the FPS limiter setting it to a factor of between 20 -30 and setting frame rates to unlimited within FSX.

Could someone let me know ,in simple terms, how I download this piece of software and how I intergrate it into FSX.

I aoplogise if the answer is obvious but I am not very 'techy' but would appreciate someone's assistance.

    I thank you in advance.

It'll be good if you let us know your PC specs, in the case that you have one good machine for FSX, FPSlimiter is not needed.

Have you tried this ? http://www.venetubo.com/fsx.html If you tweek your FS with this tool you might not need FPSlimiter.

once you tweek your FSX with the tool above they will redirect you to FPSlimiter download, or here : http://www.fsx-online.com/sites/defa...imiter_0.2.zip

Unzip the file inside the FSX folder ( "C/ProgramFiles/MicrosoftGames/Microsoft Flight Simulator X" folder) cut the files from the "fpslimiter" folder and past them inside the FSX folder.

click on the "FPS_Limiter_GUI.jar" file, choose D3D9, OGL or D3D8 ( it has something to do with the graphics card i think.)
then search the executable file ( located inside FSX folder, should be " FSX .exe" ), now click on "logging" then " create BAT ".
the ".bat" file has been created inside FSX folder ( should be : FSX.exe.bat or FSX.bat ) click on it, FSX starts and have fun !

    Hi,

If you have an Nvidia graphics card, you don't need FPSlimiter. The latest drivers themselves contains a limiter which can be set with nvidiaInspector.

    Hi again,

    I have open the file and extracted its contents which are as follows;

    FPS Limiter
    FPS Limiter_GUI
    Hookhelper
    Limiter_D3D8
    Limiter_D3D9
    LImiter_OGL

Now,from your previous post I take it that you mean to copy and paste both FPS Limiter files into the main FSX folder. The Limiter_GUI contains the selection choice for one of the 3 files but how will I know which one to choose.

I would welcome any further assistance.

I just always set it to 'Unlimited' within the sim. Frames are always higher than a locked target.

The best cure-all is to simply buy a PC that can handle FSX; I waltzed into my local PC shop a few years ago and said "build me a PC that'll play all modern high-end games and sims" and this is what they came up with-

    Intel Core2 Duo E8500@3.16GHz
    RAM 4.0GB Dual-channel DDR2@400Mhz
    NVIDIA GeForce GTS 250 1024Mb
    Win XP Home

It cost 600 GB pounds (950 US dollars) and was the smartest move i ever made, it handles everything i throw at it including FSX without a murmur.
Come on guys, £600 isn't much considering the machine will last you years, so do yourself a favour and splash out and solve all your frame rate problems blah blah at a stroke..

You know we dont allways find 600$ in a street corner.
I started playing FSX with a slow AMD that i bought in 2003, but there was many 600$ that i needed to spend in other important stuff.

once you start the limiter when the window is opened you'll have to choose between D3D8, D3D9 or OGL
( again, we dont know about your system specs, wich will help ) Just try with each one and you'll find the one that works.

Perhaps a more detailed set of instructions on using the external FPS limiter would help.

    Setting up FPS_Limiter_0.2:

1 - To use the limiter you first need to create a batch file which is then used to launch FSX. To do that, unzip the file FPS_Limiter_0.2.rar to wherever you want. The location does not matter. Just be sure you put it somewhere you can leave it because if you move it after you've created the batch file it will no longer work. For that reason, its probably a good idea to place the folder in your main FSX folder.

2 - Open the FPS_Limiter_0.2 folder and double-click the file called "FPS_Limiter_GUI.jar" (If "FPS_Limiter_GUI.jar" won't run, it probably because you don't have Java installed. Download it from here, install it and reboot. "FPS_Limiter_GUI.jar" should now run).
For the "choose:" option, use the D3D9 (I've used the limiter on many different systems but I have never found it necessary to use anything but D3D9).
There is no need to enter anything in the "name" box.
In the "maximum fps box, use the default value of 30 but you may want to try fine-tuning this value (see Note 1 at the end of this procedure).
If you do decide to fine-tune this value, you will first have to delete the batch and follow this procedure again to create a new one.

3 - Click "search executable" and navigate your way to your main FSX folder, click once on the fsx.exe file and then click the Open button.

4 - Click the "create bat" button. In a second or two a new file called "fsx.exe.limited.bat" will appear in your FPS_Limiter_0.2 folder.

    5 - Exit the FPS_Limiter GUI.

6 - In the FPS_Limiter_0.2 folder, right click the "fsx.exe.limited.bat" file, select "Send to" and then click "Desktop (create shortcut)" . This will place a shortcut on you desktop which will make it very easy to start FSX with the limiter.

    Using FPS_Limiter_0.2:

1 - Open FSX as you normally would, set the Target frame rate to Unlimited and then close FSX.

2 - Double-click the shortcut to the batch file created in step 4 above. First, a window will open showing the status of the FPS Limiter and then FSX will launch with the frame rate capped at the value set when you created the batch file. You can leave the FPS Limiter status window open in the background until you finish your FSX session or, if you prefer, you can close it after FSX has loaded.

    Usage Notes:
1 - The default FPS value is 30 but you may want to play with this as sometimes a lower frame rate (like 25, for example) will result in smoother flight.
2 - If you have a dual monitor setup, you need double the frame rate value when you create the batch file. For example, if you have two monitors and you want the frame rate capped at 30, you have to set 60 FPS when creating the batch file. Then, when you run FSX and drag another view to your second monitor, the frame will divide by two and you will have a 30 FPS cap.
3 - My personal experience has been that using the FPS limiter results in smoother flight when flying in "complex" conditions (a complex aircraft near a large airport with lost of clouds, for example). When I plan on flying in less challenging flight situations, I simply start FSX normally (ie with out the limiter) as I find, in that case, the limiter offers no performance benefit.
