you are right, in a sense. Compared to other types of scenery - airports and other general scenery enhancements - there is a lot less FREE mesh available but...
There are free offerings in the flightsim.com library for the world by Raimondo Taburet; for Australia by Thomas Trewin; for the western US by FSGenesis
and the "find anything anywhere" resource at http://www.freewarescenery.com/fsx.html
and there's always Google...

Hooked since FS4... now flying: FSX Acceleration on Win7/64, Core Duo E8400; GA-EP45-DS3R; GTX 460-768MB; 4G RAM; Freezer 7 Pro
HAF 932 Adv, PC P&C 950w, ASUS R4E, i7-3820 5.0GHz(MCR320-XP 6 fans wet), HD 7970
64GB Vengeance @ 1666MHz, 128GB SAMSUNG 830(Win 7 Ult x64), 512GB SAMSUNG 840 Pro(FSX P3D FS9)
WD 1TB Black(FS98, CFS2&3, ROF, etc.), WD 2TB Black-(Storage/Backup)
Are you passing comment or wanting recommendations? Most photosceneries come with mesh. There is Australia HolgerMesh from ORBX, and a few from OZx including mesh+photosceneries namely Tuscany, Death Valley, Grand Canton and Liguria. All are fantastic if you can handle the downloads and HDD space (about 1GB each)
Intel Core 2 Duo CPU E4400@2.00 GHz
4.00 GB RAM (3GB useable: DDR2)
Nvidia GEFORCE 9500 512MB Graphics Card
Windows 7 32-bit
That's quite a steep approach path there Don![]()
For FSX I think there is payware mesh of good quality and fairly cheap so there isn't much incentive to independently develop mesh, except for super hi-res, small areas.
