    Default Start as administrator?

I have read in several places that when I start FSX in windows 7 I should click "run as admnistrator". I am not sure what exactly this does, also, should all the other programs be started the same way-eg. ASE, REX-when loading new textures, Delta Acars...etc...?

    Thanks,

    Hi,

Just run everything as normal by left clicking on the icon.
    Thanks,

    Jim

    Jim?

Are you saying to run everything as normal, including FSX?
    Thanks

As long as you do not install FSX in the default folder, but preferably another partition or dive, you will be ok, Just start everything normally. And turn off UAC under user account control.

I don't think there is a need to disable UAC for FSX, it's personal preference. I don't have "run as administrator" set for anything.

Disabling UAC does negate the need to install FSX outside the \Program Files (or \Program Files(86) on a 64 bit Windows operating system) folder. Disabling UAC isn't something I would recommend though as it is a security feature that does have some proven uses in combating malware and virus contamination on a system. Installing FSX to a custom folder outside the \Programs Files folder will circumvent certain read/write issues that can arise with a default FSX installation location and UAC being left on.

To answer rjacks question, no you shouldn't have to start FSX with run as administrator, but it may help resolve certain issues depending on what you are doing and what FSX software add-ons you have installed. If you have a fairly recent install with only a few add-ons I would recommend uninstalling everything and starting over beginning with an FSX install anywhere but in the \Program Files folder. This will avoid Win7/Vista/UAC problems, but still allow UAC to do what it does. Otherwise disable UAC (careful!) at your own risk and don't worry about having to use "Run as Administrator" for anything FSX related.

I am thinking of doing this. But.....
Isn't there some BIG problems with getting FSX to reinstall? I have read several of the forum's threads, in which many people have not been able to get Flight Sim X re-installed.
(I have Windows 7 64-bit as my operating system, and have checked the "Properties" box of FSX.exe to "Run As Administrator". But I made the "mistake" of doing my install in the default "Programs\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X" folder. Yuck!)

    Thanks for any help,
    Randy

If it aint broke, don't fix it..... if your setup is working ok, just use it. This whole 'install outside the default' thing is way overblown.

..........until you try and modify a file and security will not allow you to.
    Thanks,

No, it's not the least bit "overblown." Misunderstood though, most certainly. Joe Average Simmer will never encounter a problem with using the default installation path(s). However, anyone who wishes to go further than that really will run into problems with trying to edit files in the FS9 or FSX folders.
