Garmin530/ Baron - how to activate the cursor

I have been given the Baron and LOVE the Garmin530. I have installed it ok, and it seems to work fine. The trainer works fine too, and I'm trying to learn how to use it. Here's my problem ...

The tutorial I'm following says to activate the cursor and I can't make it do it. Clicking here and there, and right-clicking here and there I've been able to get the cursor activated sometimes, but I never have been able to catch exactly what I've done to make it happen. The trainer works ok by left-clicking on the small right knob, but that doesnt happen with the one in the aircraft.

What's the trick to getting the cursor mode? (And conversely, getting back out of that mode once you're in it?)

Click the gauge to the lower right of the left knob and to the lower left of the right knob to get the cursor, click again to turn it off... both these spots are illustrated on page 9 of the User's Guide with the notation "Push"...
