    Exclamation FSX Fatal error: visualfx.dll

    Hi,

I recently started up FSX and I had continuous fatal errors, so I checked the event logger and found this:

Faulting application name: fsx.exe, version: 10.0.61637.0, time stamp: 0x46fadb14
Faulting module name: visualfx.dll, version: 10.0.61637.0, time stamp: 0x46fadb59
    Exception code: 0xc0000005
    Fault offset: 0x00020cbb
    Faulting process id: 0x19e4
    Faulting application start time: 0x01cc74cb6926dae7
Faulting application path: C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X\fsx.exe
Faulting module path: C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X\visualfx.dll
    Report Id: da6f65e3-e0be-11e0-a95a-0026b90ac075

I don't know how to fix it and would like some help please!

    Thanks

A Google search for "visualfx.dll error" indicates that some people have resolved this problem by cleaning the registry files. Download the freeware CCleaner and run the file cleaner and the registry cleaner.
    Hope this helps.

Thanks for that, but I have already run a registry cleaner 3 times and still nothing.

    Thanks for the suggestion though!

Just wondering dude, is your FSX closing after right-clicking to get other views etc? I find if I use the on screen menu too much then that's when my FSX crashes. I'm just wondering if other pilots have the same problem.

Probably off topic here. What you're experiencing can be solved with the UiAutomationCore.dll fix (do a forum search).

    Hi again,

The first answer, no it isnt the views menu as i cant get past the fsx free flight page

Secondly, i have tried a repair but now the vent viewer shows a dll called 'simprop.dll' causing the problem.

Thridly, thanks i will try the uiautomationcore.dll and see what happens before i do a full reinstall.

    Thanks guys

I've seen the "Registry Clean" fix posted too. Mostly the same guy. If it fixed it for him, good, he had a duff registry.

The visualfx.dll is directly responsible for, what else, displaying your effects(.fx).
The error could be caused by a recent add-on that included a model or effect that was corrupted some how. They generally result in black squares, but, can also cause the sim to error if that is what it's trying to load at startup. Recent Default Flight change?

A quick check of the dll itself will tell you if it was somehow corrupted. Your version: 10.0.61637.0(FSX X-Pack) is the same as mine and should match byte for byte.
Here are my Visualfx.dll Properties. FSX folder, Highlight it, Right Click.

    General tab
    Size: 199KB [203,840 bytes]
Size on disk: 200KB [204,800 bytes]

I have never seen that particular error, even when I've had a funky effect, so don't really know.

My normal routine for isolating/fixing unfamiliar errors is remove all add-ons, Rename FSX.cfg and let the sim build a new one.

When you did your repair, did you use the following method?
I ask because I found out, the hard way, that the repair done with Acceleration installed, only repairs the Acceleration portion, not the base FSX and it's files.
    Remove Acceleration
Repair FSX, run the sim, de-frag, reboot.
Reinstall Acceleration, run the sim, de-frag, reboot.

I'm on Windows 7 and create a weekly restore point, and a monthly back-up image.
If none of the above works, and you have those also, try 'em.

The absolute last resort, is un-install/re-install. That also requires you to clean up all traces of FSX from your system including the registry, before the re-install...Don

Yes "off topic". No this is not a "UiAutomationCore.dll" issue. It is most certainly a "Visualfx.dll" issue.

What I have found, after e x t e n s i v e research, is that this error usually shows up after a change/addition to the "Airplanes" folder, and seems to be related to the "FSX.cfg\[USERINTERFACE]\SITUATION=" section. This is the "default flight" and I found (ALWAYS BACKUP your .CFG FILE) if you delete the line after

    "SITUATION="

FSX will start up. Then, if you wish, you can go back and reset your default flight via the "Free Flight\Load\(choose your flight)\Make this the default flight" menu.
