Thread: Can I run FSX on this PC?

Default Can I run FSX on this PC?

Hy, I bought FSX years ago and I used it no more then 2 min because my old PC was not good enough (I'm sure my new PC isn't good enough also). Since I got the new PC, I never tried to install FSX and now I'm wondering how the game will run, if it will be acceptable or if it would need to run on lowest settings which means that I can stick to FS9 since everything is maxed out in it....the only add-ons I have (for FSX) are REX and some sceneries....

    These are the specs :

    Intel Core Duo 3.0 GHz
    2GB RAM
    512MB GeForce 9600GT
    Windows 7 Ultimate x32

Hopefully there is some1 on this forum with similar specs so that they can tell me how the game will perform

    Thanks

It will work, but not well. You could give it shot, just dont wind everything up.

It will run. The question is will it run to your satisfaction. You'll have a much better chance if you increase the memory to 4 gig. FSX won't use it all but that will leave some cushion for background stuff. Also, shut down as many of the background programs as you can. There is a freeware program to do that but I can't remember what it is. Someone else will chime in on that I'm sure. I certainly won't hurt to give it a try.

Yep it will run. But please don't think you can run the sliders at the levels of some of the screenshots you may have seen!

Well that's the problem...I know it will run but how good? That's why I said that I'll better stick to FS9 since is maxed out. It will probably not run at a decent level so I should abandon the idea until I'll get the mother of all PCs....I don't know if I should try and install it or not, probably it will be a waste of time...

@opcartmell, something is wrong with my PC, I can't put more then 2GB RAM on...it has slots but the PC won't recognize them

I'm running an AMD dually @ 3.1GHz, 2GB DDR2-800 RAM and an HIS AGP HD 4670(1GB). I do have Win7x32 and FSX on an SSD.
Unless I get way too ambitious with the sliders, and stay away from the biggies like Kennedy and Heathrow, I see my locked 20FPS normally.
I run: Graphics 1280x1024x32, set "Ultra" then, no lens flare and change to anisotropic filtering. My AA is done in CCC. Aircraft = Med High.
Scenery: Max LOD, Max Mesh complex., 2m Mesh, 30cm Texture, High 2.x Water, Scenery Complex X dense, Autogen Sparse, Sp effects High.
RW weather; detailed clouds at min distance, med density(unless I'm shootin' screenies, then I max it).
Traffic 50% Airline and GA, min airport, 0 road, 15% pleasure and ships.
Using the lower monitor resolution and running windowed gives my best performance.
If I'm in an area where I have photoreal scenery I usually don't have to back off. I see an occasional stutter and if low and fast get a lag now and again.
I did increase my page file to 4GB, so Otto can fly while I browse, play Chess, fix panels and gauges, sometimes simultaneously. ...Don

Kind of on the same topic and related to running FSX on lower end machines. If you use the autogen tweak in the FSX cfg and really lower the numbers of buildings and trees to around 75 to 100 and or lower still, you will get much visual satisfaction and better frame rates. Just lowering the the sliders, you miss a lot of things visually such as jetways, water towers, shopping centers and billboards. Using these numbers to 150 each on my machine brings the frame rates up to the equivilent of the normal settings on both the sliders without the tweak. Just raise the sliders to max if you use it. My machine is a quad core at 3.0 ghz with 4 gigs of ram and windows 7 64 bit. Not much different than yours and it's smooth enough for me to enjoy. Hope this helps.

@fsxttcb, weejam, this tips were really helpful and may bring hope in running FSX at some decent settings.

fsxttcb, may I ask for some screenshots with your FSX settings (all of them)? You can send them via PM if you want

I checked out the website called Can You Run It, it basically shows you how your PC will perform running different games. The results were very bad but when I selected Dirt3, the results were also bad (saying that I'll run Dirt3 at minimum settings) even though everything is maxed out...so that website is crap

It will run, probably not the best grafics. There is nothing wrong with your PC. Your Operating system is 32 bit windows, that will not recognise 4 Gb Ram. Maybe 3Gb with some tricks (Google for that), but normally only 2Gb. the bottleneck in yours system is the grafics card I think. Getting one with at least 1Gb Ram (instead of 512) maybe more, and at least DDR3 Ram, maybe DDR5 (pricey!) would get you much better grafics. and is easy to install. Then you should get acceptable grafics. Also a newer (faster) harddisk could help.

Win 32 bit will be fine with 4gb of RAM.... its just wont recognise anymore than 4 gigs
