  1. Question New Guy with a rooke question.

Hello, I'm new around here, though i've been using Microsoft Flight Simulator since 2006, when i got FS2004, and have since moved on to FSX. That said, i have been running into an occasional problem when i try to import older aircraft into FSX. Usually, FS2004 aircraft will import, they just have the airplane outline with the question mark on them. I can live with that. But every once in a while, the aircraft name will put itself under the picture of another, working, plane. For instance, with the B-29 i just downloaded, the trio of aircraft put themselves under the first three built-in Jet Ranger helicopters (because they have "Bell" in their name). This makes that aircraft, even though it's a Bell 206 in the thumbnail, become a B-29B superfort. This also pushes every other aircraft three down the list, and makes the last three plains on the list "vanish." i can't select them.

I don't know if this is a problem associated with all FSX copies or is just a local thing. It just gets annoying as it seems to only happen when i find something good! any help i can get would be greatly appreciated, and thank you in advance.

What did you do to the aircraft.cfg?
    I think it's messed up.

    Welcome to the forum.

A possible reason is corrupted thumbnail.jpg files in the B-29 texture folders.
Check for the existance of such files, and simply DELETE them.
After that check if yr AC selection problem is solved (you should get the known Q-marks for the B-29s now).

Next step could be to create yr own thumbnails (not the subject of this thread, so I'll stop right here).

In addition, you might this "checklist" thread useful when adding aircraft - it covers some of the more obvious reasons an aircraft does not display (or make others vanish) after you have added it:

    Hope that helps.

Top Gun- If no one else finds that list helpful, I certainly do and thank you for posting it. I have the same problem with a single photo showing a question mark. Now maybe I can solve it.

    Hello:

A suggestion or two that may be of interest or help to you.

For imported or added aircraft that give you the "airplane outline with the question mark on them", to add a jpg image, there are several tools available to give you that image. Search this site, AvSim, or for that matter just a Google search for the following:

    fsscreen.zip (My personal preference)
snapshot_v3.1.zip (another which I seldom or ever use, but may be a good option)

    Read the instructions!

    Hope this helps:

thank you for replying. I'm still trying to get myself used to poking my head in every now and then, so bear with me. the aircraft file checks out against the checklist, so no problems there. but what i noticed is there is no thumbnail.jpg file in the texture folders to begin with. I'm assuming that's the issue, as these aircraft were built for FS9/2004 and there weren't any thumbnail pictures in FS2004 (If i remember correctly). so, i'm going to assume (I'm doing a lot of assuming...that's usually not a good thing) that adding one will solve the problem. I'll try the thumbnail creator program and see if that corrects the issue.

again thank you. if this doesn't work...well, i'll post here again.

EDIT: okay, interesting development. i can't get the FS-screen program to install. I don't know if that's because i'm using FSX or what, but is there something i'm doing wrong? it tells me to find a program to open FS-screen, but i can't seem to find the right one. maybe i'm looking right at it (again). any suggestions?
