Thread: I can't find my CD drive!

1. Question I can't find my CD drive!

Hi all,
I am looking to install FSX on my Advent T9. Trouble is, I can't find the CD drive! :?
It does say it on the label that it has a DVD re/Writer and a 16x CD-ROM, and alot of SD card slots, but not a CD drive?
A picture of it is here:

I press the DVD Drive(s) button and nothing pops/folds out. I have some scissors on me so I could hack it open if nesscary, but I don't want to incase the cover is important/ will do damage to my machine.

FSX requires a DVD drive for installation.
To check if your system actually has a DVD drive, on Windows XP, click Start and then click My Computer (if Windows Vista or Windows 7, click Start and then click Computer).
If your system has a DVD drive installed, it will show up in the list.
What's behind the front panel door?
Intel i7 930@4.2GHz / Swiftech H20-220 Apex Ultima / Gigabyte X58A-UD3R / 6 gb G.Skill DDR3 1600
60GB Corsair Force GT
(Win 7 Pro 64-bit) / 120GB OCZ Vertex 2 (FSX) / 600GB WD Velociraptor
MSI GTX570 OC / X-Fi XTreme Gamer / CM 850Watt / CM Stacker 832 / Acer S211HL / Samsung 215TW

On the attached picture it says "DVD drives"
Anyway, I have four "removable disks" G, H, I and F.
Ima try to attempt to hinge the door open with a paperclip as the panel will only be a bit of plastic anyway. I think.

Don't force it!
Unless you, or the installer, changed the name it should be named something like "CD/DVD Drive(X : )" in windows explorer.
If not, you can right click on the drive in windows explorer and click "Properties" it will tell you if it is a CD/DVD drive or Removeble Disk(usually a USB/Firewire port).
You should be able to ID it that way. If none of the drive's properties are noted as a CD Drive, check in Control Panel/Device Manager and be sure that DVD/CD-ROM drives is there and "This device is working Properly" is displayed.
If it is there and won't open with the button, right click on the drive in windows explorer there should be "Eject" click it and see.

Worse case: There is a tiny little hole for opening the drive in an emergency/failure situation. A paperclip should do...Don

Ok, so I checked the proporties and looking around, I found this about my Two CD drives (Start>Control panel>System>Hardware>Device manager)

"Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)"

I tried reinstalling both of them and no luck. What next? :S

Unless the drives need drivers that are really different than the norm, you should be able to remove them in device manager and reboot.
When you reboot they should be detected and there should be a pop-up asking if you want Windows to search for the correct driver...Yes.

Meanwhile see if you can locate drivers from the manufacturer(s).
They should not be necessary, or even different than the standard "cdrom.sys" ATAPI driver, but, who knows. 'tis a weird one...Don

Ok, in both of those methods I could not find these files in the folder:
••UpperFilters
•LowerFilters
•UpperFilters.bak
•LowerFilters.bak

Which are the ones which are "supposedly" causing this problem. Take alook at the methods and see if i've gone wrong, or my computer is just a pile of.

Which folder are you referring to? These settings are found in the registry.
Always make a backup before changing anything in the registry.
