Default Can someone steer me to a good instructional for overclocking to better run FSX?

I've been tempted but never tried overclocking to improve FSX results. I'm interested in giving it a shot. Is there a good place to best explain all the details on how to do this without causing problems.

Interested in knowing if I need additional cooling for the CPU over what I currently have. http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16835186134

Recommended amounts it can be raised to safely.

    Thanks,
    Mitch

I have found that if you do a Google search using the phrase " Overclocking a E8600 and then insert your MB" you will find many places that offer videos etc. on how to safely OC.
    Good luck.

To get you started, here's a beginner's guide to C2D overclocking.

just my 2 pence... some basics:
you will need a motherboard that allows you to set the processor speed manually ( BIOS setting, or jumper on the motherboard). You will need a processor that can run at different speeds (listens to motherboard for speed it is to run at and doesnt automatically allways run at the same speed). If those conditions are met you can start thinking about other parts like: better processor fan, system fan (you can run those directly off the power supply unit if you dont have an extra motherboard connector), and also a cooler running power supply unit. what also helps for cooling is a larger computer case and takin out things you never use like an old cdROM. Also think about a power supply unit with more Watt-output (power) because running a processor at high speed takes extra current. (thats where the heat comes from!!!!)
Personally I think that a slightly better computer then what you have now (seccond hand is possible for running FSX smoothly) or a better video card is a better option. Overclocking is cool, but can be causing system instability, and its not cool if you can fly, but your compu crashes .

    Sage Advice.
Googling, I use "CPUnumber MoboNumber Overclock" Take notepad with you! That E8600 with a top notch air cooling solution will go well beyond 4GHz...Don

Thanks all for the great advice.
Supposedly my Mobo is designed for overclocking. (EVGA nForce 680i sli A1)
I think my weakest link is the current cooling system. I had read anything over 3.5 Ghz should be liquid cooled.

I don't know where you read that liquid cooling is required beyond 3.5GHz because that is just not the case especially when talking about the E8600 or even most modern-day processors for that matter. One of my systems, for example, has an E8600 running at 4.2HGz using a Tuniq Tower 120 air cooler and the temp under load only gets to around 63 degrees C.

Interesting Noell. I guess that's why you should do a lot of reading before committing to what you read on the internet. I think it was in one of the forums at Overclock.net or an article I had found somewhere.
How can I best tell if what I've got will do the trick? There doesn't seem to be a firm way of telling what you'll get with the different cooling systems. Maybe I should first download one of the temperature check systems and see what I'm getting right now.

Good to know you're getting 4.2 with the same processor and the air type cooling.

The Freezer 7 Pro is actually a pretty decent cooler for the price and you will do quite well with it providing your case has good airflow. Here's one review showing an E8600 at a bit over 60 degrees when running at 4.3GHz using the Freezer 7 Pro. So I woudn't change a thing. Just go ahead with the cooler you have and see how it goes. Suggest CoreTemp or RealTemp for temp monitoring.

Excellent!!! I downloaded the CoreTemp and attached a shot of it as FSX was loading. I had left my system on most of the day so it was running but not putting any demand on the system. What would be the max degrees before shutting down?

I also noticed that it supports my Logitech G15 keyboard which has a display capable of showing the temps so I can make use of that as well.
