    Default New to Online flying

    Hi there,
I am not new to Flight Simulator, but I want to start online flying. We have a Virtual Air Force, and I want to know the following:
    1) what do I have to do in order to may fly online with Flightsim Servers?
    2) I only have a 3G modem, will it work? My connection speed is faster than our ADSL at work.
3)How does it affect port forwarding as it is not a router.

Mods, I trust this is the correct forum for this post?

    Thanks so long,

    Jakes

    Hi Johan,

    Absolutely the right forum!

    (1) Just a few basics here ... and then some direction, as these questions are answered time and time again ... just not so handy sometimes.

You will need a copy of FS 2004 or a copy of FSX and a small program titled FSHostClient found here: http://www.chocolatesoftware.com/fsh...ostclient.html ... FS 2004 does NOT need this software.

    [NOTE]
Whether you grab the download or not ... find the homepage for this site and bookmark it .... then as time allows read through it.

Also an active internet connection that will allow you to connect with other players in a specific session ... even if you do not have a router (lucky man) you have to make exceptions in your firewall for Flight Simulator and Direct Play.

    (2) The 3G modem ... laptop I'm guessing ... should work just fine as long as it's configured to be compatible with an FSHost connection.

    (3) If you are fortunate enough to have it as simple as it sounds there will be very little to do at all .. except to satisfy (1) and (2).

You have some reading and research to do .... then give it a shot ... and if after the research you have an issue with connections then drop us another post here.

There is a wealth of resource here on this forum, but it's painfully slow at best ... volleying posts back and forth.

You need to set up and bookmark sites that are a click away ... no waiting for replies ... that you can use to get yourself online and have help later.

A specific problem would be best addressed here.

The broader scope needs to be addressed by the individual on his/her best schedule ... basically do your homework before the test.

Sounds like a lot ... it may not be in your case ... it has been quite a struggle for others.

On a positive side, we haven't failed anyone yet (that I can remember) ... it's been seven years now since we got started.

These are not all of the sources, but they will get you rolling ... any one may be just the trick: [in no particular order]

    http://www.flightsim.com/vbfs/showth...es-Forum-FAQ-s

If you don't have any luck ... I can try to help out over a Teamspeak 3 connection most any day of the week ... just need a little heads up as to a time and date.

Good Luck ... keep in touch, we are always looking for guys who like to fly fast (with realism sliders full right!) for our Round the World Race team every year.

Keep at you'll get it and if not give us a shout.

    Cheers,

Thank you for the quick response!
I have done quite some reading and my homework etc, and I think I have sorted out my firewall, locked my framerates to 25fps. If it is okay with you guys, I will connect later tonight to test my system. If all is not working fine, please boot me!
I am looking forward to join you guys!

    Cheers,

    Jakes

    Welcome aboard!

The only times that I've had to put on the "Boot" ... was for behavioral issues.

If your connection isn't clean, then it won't hold unless you are on alone.

I should be on some today and later tonight ... various times during the weekend too.

Thing is ... during a process of elimination you should have established and be working with only facts.

There are way too many non-compliant knuckleheads on here from time to time and that may not be the best testing arena.

We are running an event this Sunday at 1900 ZULU ... come out early if you can and be surrounded by folks who know what they are doing and run solid connections.

You may want to participate and you are certainly welcome if you have the time.

Not much time left to prepare ... if you are interested, find the needed scenery ... do some fly-bys and show up early 1830 Z or so..

If you're interested and have any trouble preparing ... post to that thread and I'll help you with it.

We never established if your running FS9 or FSX ...

This event won't work in FSX, but you can still be on the server with us to affirm your connectivity.

The welcome is in place whether you can make it Sunday or not.

School should always be first ... there will be other times.

Me and a Friend Dave tested my system last Friday night on Flightsim.com's server, and all went well. Ok, we were the only two online, and I know when a third person want to connect, sometimes, he/she cannot when one player's settings are not 100%, so if anyone wanted to connect Friday night and had problems, it could be my fault, and I apologize.

We flew, with only FS9's chat function as communication, and was wondering about teamspeak? is it available, etc?

Appreciate your attitude Johan, too many wouldn't care who got "bumped"

Sounds like your MSFS multiplayer connection is in working order... congrats!

With just two of you on ... even without correct port settings ... others could have hooked, but only for a short period, then connection would have been lost.

If the crowd was larger, then someone "on" that doesn't have ports opened correctly may even keep folks from finding the session at all.

Teamspeak 2 and 3 are both available ...

    TS2 67.240.51.120:8768

    TS3 67.240.51.120:9987

    To connect:

Make sure you have the 8768 port extension specified in the IP address to hook to TS 2.

The 9987 is the default port for TS 3 .. might check it just to be sure.

Push to talk ... no voice activated mics please.

Client software can be found here: http://www.teamspeak.com/?page=downloads

They are operating system specific ... you'll just need the client software.

We'll be using TS 3 mostly for now and exclusively before long.

See ya soon then ... watch for event announcements ... check out the Hoplist.

Type "?hoplist" in the chat box.

    Cool stuff!

I see that on Flightsim.com MPA Server( Teamspeak3) there is a Channel ZSFlyers - "S. Africa Regional" but I know that ZS Flyers do not operate anymore.
We have a Virtual Air force , and I notice that a Channel can be created. What is the possibility that me , as owner and main Admin of UVSAAF can create our own channel? and how does the frequencies of the channels work?

    Thanks in advance,

    Jakes

    Hi Johan,

At your word (non-operational) I have removed the designation for the ZS Flyers channel and replaced it with UVSAAF ... and as such is available for your use right now.

We have had that channel established for them for a while ... it would be good to hear from one of them as to their status ... if you have a way to get in touch with Werner or one of the others, please have them drop us a post to confirm.

Copy and paste ... in a private message ... your unique ID# the next time you login in to the TS 3 server ... it should show in the right hand window ... We'll see about some other than standard privileges.

Until then, as far as frequency requests are concerned or any other settings ... you may post any new values you wish ... privately if you'd prefer in a PM ... and I can have them changed as well.

Also, I would be happy to help with the installation of the server software if and when you can find a suitable "home" for UVSAAF's private teamspeak server to which you would be the sole administrator.

    [NOTE]
It is important to remember (all of us) that this facility ... that includes our FSHost, TS2, TS3, and IBNet servers ... is independently operated and it's use donated by a private individual from his residence and not directly affiliated with this website.

The owner/operator will of course have the final word on any activity on this server at all times.

Feel free to use the FSHost server ... may keep out the cobwebs ... and if your group would like it secured for an event that does not conflict with any other scheduling, it can be tied down at your request with a password as well as have a structured weather scheme sent to all players.

Every year in ... in January and February for a few weeks ... the FSHost server is subject to being closed for practice and the running of the Microsoft Flight Simulator Around the World Race ... so plan accordingly ... no worries as you guys will of course be participating anyway, right?

If and when you have secured a server for your clubs activities and desire your own FSHost server to compliment TS, I would be happy to assist with it's set up as well.

    Happy Days ...
