Thread: New aircraft slowing FSX down!

  1. Exclamation New aircraft slowing FSX down!

    Hi there,

I have recently installed the Wilco CRJ series and Wilco 777 for FSX. I am having this problem with actually loading the aircraft in a timely fashion. Whenever I click the 'Choose Aircraft' button, it takes like 5 minutes just to load the aircraft. I uninstalled it, and flew another aircraft, but realized that it loaded faster this time (the aircraft dialogue, that is...). I'm just wondering if there is a way to reduce loading time of the dialogue and speed up FSX? Thanks a ton!

Well, make sure your harddrive is nice and defragged first, having fsx on its own drive helps alot too. Considering a solid state drive or a raid array would also help. My system also takes longer with complex addons, but never "like" 5 mins. You might try http://www.venetubo.com/fsx.html to make you a decent FSX config if you havn't already tried. (BACKUP 1st!) Feel free to PM me.

Install fewer aircraft, remove some of the aircraft you have.

The time it takes to load up the "Select Aircraft" screen is directly related to the number of aircraft you have and their complexity.

One thing you can do to speed up loading is modify the aircraft.cfg file of the aircraft you do not fly often.

Make a backup copy of the aircraft.cfg file.
In each fltsim.n section you do not want to fly - change the panel= line to read panel=off
That makes the aircraft not display in the load aircraft screen, but is available for AI or if needed for other aircraft to load properly.

You may have a corrupted file or a bad aircraft design. If it is a particular aircraft or group of them only thing you can do is get rid of them and also scan for malware. To many programs trying to run may overload resources so check for that to see what your computer is doing.

No, it's neither of those ('You may have a corrupted file or a bad aircraft design'). Sounds like a (bad) guess to me. (Ok: what file is 'corrupted'? And what does 'bad aircraft design' mean? Textures? Model? What!?).

It is what Reggie said. Guesses don't count when it comes to fixing a problem. Guesses are obvious (we're not idiots, you know). Try to supress the impulse to post for posting's sake and all you got is a guess. That is NO help. And what happens when you make a bad recommendation (like 're-install FSX', etc). Not very beneficial. In fact it's destructive, malicious, and annoying. All because you want to post 'something'? It's your 1st post? No matter. Remember this for the future.

Geeze,,,,,nothing like shooting down people that are just here to help. Maybe you know it all but I'm guessing you have "guessed" in the past too.

To start with, as Chuck said, guessing doesn't help anyone. Sending an OP on a wild goose chase is flat out rude.

Corrupt aircraft won't load. Huge/Highly detailed aircraft load slow. Not generally 5 minutes slow, though.
If the plane loads and works properly, then there is nothing that points to corrupt files or malware infesting it.

Background processes and Anti-Virus Apps can slow things to a crawl also. Try disconnecting from the net and disabling your AV.
Your AV can take lots of time if it is actively scanning those large aircraft files while loading them.
You can also try GameBooster or another background process killer to help eliminate unrelated resource use during gaming.

Changing planes and then changing back will load a previous plane faster because it's files are probably still in the cache...Don

Actually ynchief your guess was probably a lot closer than either napa mule or fsxttcb gave you credit for. I had the same thing happen once and the only solution was to remove the offending aircraft. And since I have a hanger full of highly detailed and purchased aircraft, knew it was not just that my hanger was getting full. The offending aircraft for me was a 757 freeware package, and as soon as I removed it everything went back to normal. Every time I added it, it slowed the whole thing down incredibly, way beyond just loading more info.

Having said all that, more aircraft does slow your load times when you click on choose aircraft. PESilverhawk, would suggest running a few tests .e remove the folder from the Simobjects/Airplanes and if the problem definitely unique to the new aircraft, uninstall, reinstall and if the problem persists contact the designer. it could very well be a corrupted file in extraction.

In case you missed it in the shuffle here is the 'Million Dollar Line' from Reggie: 'In each fltsim.n section you do not want to fly - change the panel= line to read panel=off . That makes the aircraft not display in the load aircraft screen, but is available for AI or if needed for other aircraft to load properly.' (This works because if your airplane does not have a panel ('panel=off') then FSX will not load the airplane. No panel, no load).

This will help you with troubleshooting (scientifically). And if you suspect some airplane is bogging down FSX it will usually be the panel and it's gauges that will be the culprit. Alias panel to a default airplane panel. And even alias sound to a default airplane sound. Then try it. After this it would be the poly count and the result will be that your pc just don't have 'it' (hard to swallow, I know) but too many times THIS is the ONLY 'real' problem-not enough puter. Sorry about the rant. I hate cryptic, catch all, 'maybe' this, guesses, not knowing, but posting anyway. If your fist post is vague, or a guess, then I have zero tolerance. So sue me.
