Default Just a comment / observation about FSX

I have been flying FS2004 on my gateway for 3 years and am very happy with it . I'm a private pilot so I do have some objective view when I compare FS to actual flight. I found a copy of standard FSX for about $20.00 at local Walmart so decided : " what the heck for this price I can try it out . Nothing to loose . " So I downloaded it (without removing FS2004 ) knowing full well I wouldnt be able to run FSX with highest settings or even close for that matter . So here is my Question ( or maybe just an observation ) Why is it FS2004 runs beautifully with almost all settings set at maxium or close to maximum and Yet FSX runs absolutely terrible with all settings set at as LOW as you can get them !!!! Not only that , I noticed certain important cockpit view adjustments such as " shift enter or backspace " which adjust the forward view out the cockpit ( which allows a proper view for taxing ) fail to work . Also , unlike FS2004 I'm unable to use a single joystick button for seamless shifting from " cockpit " to " virtual cockpit " without having to assign a seperate button or having to go up to the menue. My FS2004 automatically assignned these features right from the initial loading. Frankly , I'm not so sure ( as some people have already observed ) that the extra bells and whistles you get from FSX are worth the effort and price of a computor capable of running it .

Almost every one of your points is/are incorrect.

Perhaps it might be better to spend some time with the package before you criticise it? You don't provide system specs, nor do you tell us which version of FSX you are using. SP1 and PS2 dealt with most of the performance issues. Cockpit view adjustments work with different key combinations. You can use a single joystick button to switch between VC and 2d panel views.

More time learning, less time moaning, if you don't mind.

    Hi,

If you don't like FSX after learning how to use it, uninstall the program and move back to FS9.

A computer that is 3+ years old is not going to run FSX well.

You also need to probably update FSX with SP1 and SP2 and do that properly as well.
    Thanks,

    Jim

Well, I don't know about that. I have a 4 year old machine and I get pretty good performance out of it and I'm running ASE with it. It becomes a matter of some tweaking and playing with all the memory and resource hogs on your machine. Of course many of the sliders stay at center position.

Not happy? Shelve it, or tweak your heart out until you realize it ain't gonna get any better! FSX has it's limitations, and IMO, the biggest is it's need for speed.

I'm like the mechanic that drives a clunker. I put together a new computer for myself about every 5-6years. Socket 1155 was awful beguiling, but, Socket 2011 is just around the corner. 5+GHz, here I come! Meanwhile I'll continue to adapt what I have, to the situation at hand, and deal with it's limits with a smile...Don

Ok all : I surrender I shouldnt even have hit the submit key . Im out of my league :
And now for a little humor:

Only two bad things can happen to a pilot :

    A. He walks out to his plane knowing this will be his last flight .

    B. He walks out to his plane NOT knowing this will be his last flight .

It's funny about your complaints about FSX. I have both FS9 and X and I fly X all of the time (I bought FS9 after I got X). And from the other side of the coin, I can't stand flying in FS9. Mainly because it is not set up the same way as my FSX is (for example, I use an xBox 360 controller and FS9 doesn't recognize one of the analog controls which I use to look around and have to use the D-pad). It really amounts to what you are used to and having to deal with something different. I think they call it "growing pains". The same thing occurs when you get a new phone.

That being said, if you don't like FSX now then put the FSX back in it's box and save it for when you have a more powerful computer (or at least graphics card).

Well said. Greetings, I'm a pilot too, or at least I used to be.

Mr. Mallcott may be a little rough around the edges, but he is right

Jim is right about the computer you need but I don't think he's emphasizing it strongly enough. Below are my computer specs, most people would consider it average or a little below average. I don't have any add ons. Fsx is great but you really really need the computing horsepower.
