Haven't been able to log in to main site at various different times for the past week. Tried 8am, noon, midnight, and even 3am. All Nodes Busy no matter when. I realize it gets a lot of traffic, but come on... You'd think this was a porn site. :)

Nope, not broke, just extremely busy!

Actually, this topic has been beat to death many times over, but the nuts & bolts of it is that there are many users all over the world trying to log in. 3 AM for you is'nt 3 AM on the other side of the world. The best thing to do is either pay the $ 30.00 for 1st class service or keep hitting F5 & ENTER in hopes you'll get in ( which you will, contrary to popular belief )
Best Regards,

Then my porn site analogy was correct?
lol
I had a discussion with Nels, over this, some time ago. I believe the number of people that could gain free access is now restricted to the minimum necessary to maintain a "free site". Due, mainly, I think, to the cost of running it. Nels admitted that he could not make it a pay site because the people that write all this add-on software would not allow it. I've recorded the number of attempts it takes to get on over the past 6 months, and this has ranged from 1 (on one or two occassions only) to over 700, and this at all times of the day from 05.00 hrs to 02.00 hrs UK time.
You see, I could have accepted that it's busy, and that this is the cause but for the fact that this all changed on or about Nov. 9th 2001. Prior to that I had no problems whatsoever. I could count on one hand the number of times I had to make more than one attempt, and then only maybe 2 or 3.
After that date, sufficient to say that on one day over the Xmas period I failed to get on AT ALL, over the whole day, and in one week could only manage a handfull of times. Now come on, common sense tells us that this can't happen overnight.
Yes, of course we could all pay for access, and this is, I believe, the ultimate goal, but if it's going to become a pay site let's come clean and say so.
In addition, you may have noticed that this 2 hour limit suddenly appeared from nowhere. I don't have a problem with this but it would have been nice to have been advised that this was to happen.

Why, does Nels owe you something ?

First off - do you have ANY idea what a web site cost to start up, operate & maintain ? Secondly - so what if that is his ultimate goal ? ( which I don't believe it is ). He's got the right to make money too you know ! Do you expect a paycheck from your boss for the work you do ? Do you ask questions when the check-out clerk at Wal-Mart asks you to pay before you leave the store with their products ? Are you surprised that the barbor asks for payment after he preforms a service to you ?
NELS DOES THIS OUT OF THE GOODNESS OF HIS HEART AND NO ONE HAS THE RIGHT TO COMPLAIN ABOUT SOMETHING THAT IS FREE - ESPECIALLY SOMETHING THAT SHOULD BE COSTING EVERY SINGLE ONE OF US BUT ISN'T !!!!!!! This is HIS site and he can do with it as he pleases. Just be thankfull he is the kind of guy he is. He doesn't let you into his forum for free to hear you complain.
Gripe all you want, but someday, the time will come when we all HAVE to pay and you will look back and say " ya know, things wern't so bad back in 'the good ole days' when everything was free."
( Boy - For someone not wanting to beat a dead horse, I sure pummeled this poor deceased equestrian )
Just a note about signing in. I can recall times when it was 3am in the morning and I had to hit F5 70 times or more to get in. I can also recall times when it was 4pm(the peak time) and I got in the first try.
Just for argument's sake - I just tried - It took me 9 trys and a whopping 17 seconds - Is that so bad ?
Rtriez,
Perhaps you ought to try reading what I wrote, NOT what you think I wrote. No, Nels doesn't owe me anything, which is why I said "it would have been nice, etc...." not he SHOULD have. There's a whole world of difference.
Then, so far as the second of your paragraphs is concerned I believe that most people accept there's no such thing as a free lunch (except for the free downloads) and that we have a tremendous amount to be grateful to people like this, including Nels. If you took the time to read my post carefully I merely said that he should come clean so that we'd all know where we are. We can then, each of us, decide whether we want to contribute. I, for one would say yes, so that's not the issue. You would probably say we have that option anyway but, again, that's not the issue.
You don't need to reply, that would only prolong a discussion many have heard before. I said it like I found it, and gave my opinions - I'm entitled to that. So let's close this thread now, eh?

Nels has "come clean", as you put it, many, many times! It is amazing to me, however, that this subject still comes up. You, or I, or any of the other 15,000 plus members of this forum simply do not know what goes on behind the scene. Nels has from time to time published facts and figures of the numbers of people logging in to fs.com. This number is astounding, to say the least, and somewhat mind numbing.
This is far and away the largest flight sim site in the world, and as a result of being that, it is impossible to allow all the users to access the site simultaneously. Ultimately, we, the users, only have ourselves to blame. Because we are hooked on this hobby, and in our quest for more aircraft, panels, sounds, etc., have flooded the source of these aircraft, etc., with our desire to access them, we do have to pay some dues. Those dues are either to repeatedly try to log-in, (and that sometimes is easy, and other times not), or go the route of a First Class Membership. For years, I went the former route, but now have chosen the latter. For less than the price of a daily cup of coffee or a soft drink, I get instant access.
