You need to supply more information about what kind of system you have, i.e. CPU type, memory capacity, disk capacity, and especially graphics accelerator type. If you are doing a full install of FS2K2, what size of disk partitions do you have. You may be running out of disk swap space.FS2K2 uses a more elaborate scenery generation setup than FS2000.

When I had this problem, all I needed to do was open FS2002 go to settings-> display-> Hardware and check the hardware acceleration box. I don't know if it will work with you but its worth trying. Good Luck, David

I'm running FS2k2 Pro on my older laptop -- it WORKS, but I can't get the best graphics out of it either. I know EXACTLY what message you're getting, because I get (pretty much) the same message.

It's nothing to worry about, and more than likely results from your system not being "up to spec" for "best performance". FS2k2 will set "lowest" settings for graphics, dynamic scenery etc. Play with each setting, one at a time, but don't push it too far, cuz it might HANG if you try to ask FS2k2 to use settings your computer cannot handle!!

I've been able to push my AI traffic to 21% (haven't tried more yet, as this has been fine); ground scenery to DENSE, and scenery resolution to one below the max, and I'm not having any trouble. Yet (knock on wood).

*You* have not enabled "Safe Mode" -- WINDOWS has done this FOR YOU. Your graphics won't "look bad" -- they just won't be the BEST that FS2k2 was designed to produce. :)

If you have lots of RAM (possibly even a large, very fast Hard Drive with a large "virtual memory" allocation), FS2k2 will take advantage of it, and it will allow you to run it quicker, maybe with more scenery details etc.

Alternatively, don't load ALL the scenery onto your HD. Customize your install, and install only the scenery you will use the MOST, and let other scenery be loaded from the CD-Rom.

DavidBaty's idea (above) is worth looking into, if you've got the graphics hardware for it -- make sure to select Hardware Acceleration. (My laptop's got a built-in ATI Rage 3D Pro AGP, but FS2k2 goes into Safe Mode for me, too, and I can't use Hardware Accel. Haven't figured a way around that yet either.)

There's nothing really "wrong" with this -- FS2k looks BETTER because your PIII Win98 machine's hardware is closer to the specs FS2k was designed for.. FS2k2, however, demands MORE, and you don't have that, so of course it won't look as good.

"Tweak" the settings when FS2k2 starts -- start with low settings, and take the time to push each one up a step at a time. You'll eventually find where you have to STOP, when your system HANGS or CRASHES -- just reduce the last one you changed, and give it a go.

(Yes, I *did* pay attention -- you've got Pro; so have I.)

    Good luck! :)

Try this! Select start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, System Information, Tools, DirectX Diagnostic Tool. Let the DirectX Diagnostic Tool stabilize, select display, check under DirectX Features that all the accelerations are enabled. You can also test the accelerations by clicking on the two test buttons. If they are disabled or grayed out, you may need to reinstall the proper controller chip driver and graphics adapter drivers for your system. Once you have the accelerations enabled, start fs2002, select settings, display, hardware tab, and check the "enable hardware acceleration" checkbox, click OK, close fs2002. Restart fs2002 and you should have normal graphics.
