Thread: EFB for iPad

  1. Default EFB for iPad

I'm looking for a good Electronic Flight Bag for my iPad. Its only for Flight Sim use but I am after the largest coverage of UK and USA airports Aerodrome, Approach, ILS, STARS, SIDS Charts available on the iPad preferreably as an app. The ones I have come across so far are:-

    Apps
    ----
NavTech iCharts - can't find this application to install. Can anyone point me in the direction of this (can't find it in the app store)?
Jeppensen - need a serial number - how much are these ? I suspect they are expensive
ForeFlight - I have this one and this is very USA based, however you can download PDF charts in the app - Ideally want something that allows downloading of UK charts without having to manually get them

I used to use VATSIM Charts online but this has stopped working for UK since the NATS-UK site changed the links to their charts to randomly generated ones and now the web site can't link to then..

I would like to use Navigraph as they appear to have a large coverage but it is only available as an app on the PC and not the iPad (which I will be using to run FSX so can't really refer to them).. Are they releasing an iPad app? If not is there any slick way to get their charts on an iPad?

I also have PilotWizzPro on the iPhone and I used to be able to get the charts on this however this fails to work now again due to NATS-UK making a change to their site and how the charts are accessed.

I would really appreciate your help in finding a suitable application or method of accessing these..

I look forward to your feedback.

    Regards
    Mark

Mike, Check out Foreflight in the App Store. It's not free and I don't know about UK coverage. Actually, the app is free but the data subscription runs about $100 per year. It is made for RW pilots and has one of the best weather radar pages I've seen.

    Hi,

Thanks for the reply. I already have ForeFlight and a subscription, however whilst it does have information outside of the USA for airports it doesn't have any approach plates. You can "bring your own" but its not very slick in terms of where to download them from...

    Any other suggestions?

Mike, Not in any detail but I think Jeppeson has one and Wingx Pro. I don't have either so I won't be much help. The Wingx description in the App Store doesn't say anything about coverage outside the US.

No doubt there are subscription apps that work for iPad, but I imagine that most are expensive.

I use GoodReader to store and organise charts that are available free online. I find the charts I want and load them into GoodReader via my pc. The creation of folders/sub-folders is simple.

Eurocontrol has a helpful page for RW online charts, @isonline which provides links to many of the world's online AIP's.

The UK has a its AIP here Check out IAIP|Aerodrome Index-Specific. It's free and no registration is required.

The US charts are available here. It's also free and requires no registration.

All of the European charts are available via Eurocontrol at EAD-Basic. You have to register, but it's free. Personally, I've had some trouble with the javascript interface, but when it works, it's great.

Failing that, simply googling for "[ICAO code] charts" usually brings up a result for a VATSIM page with charts for the airport you want. Sometimes the charts are out of date and inconsistent with the latest AIRAC cycle, but I guess that's the price you pay for them being "free".

    cheers,

    jeff
