Thread: Tweaking, what I learned...the hard way

Smile Tweaking, what I learned...the hard way

    1) Do not tweak your Nvidia video card. Let the pro, Nvidia Inspector, do it for you: http://www.simforums.com/forums/fsx-...opic36586.html

Follow carefully the instructions. Programing Nvidia Inspector with FSX inputs is safe and relatively simple. It is free. Now, leave it alone!

    2) Do not tweak your FSX config file. Let the master, Bojote's Tweaking and Tuning, do it for you.

Save your present config file to a safe location, then delete the original config file from the FSX folder, restart FSX, go to the newly generated config file and then go to: http://www.venetubo.com/fsx.html

Follow carefully the instructions. They are relatively simple. It is free. Now, leave it alone!

    3) If able, for advanced users only, overclock your CPU and video card.

    Now, go fly.

How sweet it is. Good luck and happy flying!

This is good advice. You forgot to mention. Uninstall FSX about 20 times. Uninstall OS about 10 times. I read this on forums and just shake my head.

I'm confused, what do you mean, should one take Zachiii's advise, or disregard it (and why) ?????

It's called ironic humour. Take Zachiii's advice, though personally, I find not tweaking the cfg file is actually better. nVidia Inspector is all that's needed to make FSX look (if you an ATI card, nVidia Inspector is obviously bugger all use!) and funnily enough, the sliders in FSX take care of performance.

Also, you can use the Gigabite tools to overclock your CPU in about 30 seconds ;-) I think I set mine at around 3.2 and haven't bothered messing about with it since.

Good post, Zachiii, thanks. An excellent jumping-off place when running FSX on a good or better system. Is working for me (have already performed all your suggestions except for overclocking weeks ago & can attest to the fact that my FSX's smoothness benefitted).

Got a link for that, Paul? Am ready to try a modest overclock, running an i7 hexacore @ 3.2 & would like to try 3.6 to 3.8. Thank you, as well. :-)

*edit*- Seems one needs Gigabyte hardware for Paul's precise overclocking suggestion, & if you do then perhaps this is the jumping off place:

Bojote's Tweaking works very well. Using MSI Afterburner for my ATI graphic card for speed increases. Using Radeon Pro for video tweeks. I have several profiles for windows and gaming.

Overclocked my AMD 955Blk @ 3.7 and memory set at 7,7,7,24 from 9,9,9,24. I was surprised at the improvement was made from the memory boost.

The best tweak is still overclock the cpu, whichever brand, as TR45 has found. The i7 is built to be overclocked, and there are many that even hit 5 and 6 gig, though most hold at 4 or 4.2. It's an easy clock and - hesitantly disagreeing with you, Paul - tied in with Jesus's cfg modifications - yields the smoothest frames at very high detail.
There are numerous "fixes" which Aces - or Microsoft - didn't add, or chose not to add, or make, and for any number of reasons. 'HIMEMFIX' - 'BUFFERPOOLS' - 'SHADERS v3.0' - 'FFTF' - 'TextureMaxLoad' - 'SWAP_WAIT_TIMEOUT' - 'MAX_ASYNC_BATCHING_JOBS' - 'FULL & WINDOWED_Vsync', to name but eight that I remember - that make a huge impact on frame rates and smoothness. Adding the external frame limiter set to 30, while inside the sim - set to unlimited - another super tweak that kills stutters and jerkiness. Actually I suppose there are a goodly number of modifications that we can now use thanks to all of the technology that has come into play over the last five years or so. At one time the only 'fix' was to get an 8800GTX!

    Cheers

Unfortunately Bojote's tweaks do not work for everyone on every system.

They may work for many but I have gained nothing from them except a better understanding of what he is doing and some very good explanations.

He has done some very good work and i have found this all very interesting.

I would go along with the Nvidia Inspector changes though.

I have smooth FSX flights, accept when it came to recording fraps at full screen... stutter issues. Using Bojote's tweeks, solved that issue nicely. Just like Paul J. said, overclocking the CPU at least 3.6 or higher improves your FSX experience. Also the external frame-rate limiter works very well too. I have it set at 60 fps.
