Thread: Freeware Catalina?

  1. Question Freeware Catalina?

    Hello, all.

First of all, many apologies if this is in the wrong place or has been covered already.. There're a lot of forums here and I've gone for the one I think's most suitable, but I may be wrong.

I'm running FSX without Acceleration; I've been looking for a Catalina add-on because I've always liked flying boats and it seems a nice medium-sized aircraft that I can use for island-hopping and the like. But having checked a number of add-ons sites (flightsim.com first, obviously), I can't find one anywhere. In fact, all I can find is either the Mariner (too big), or new textures for the payware Catalina that, at the risk of seeming tight-fisted, I'd rather not spend money on at the moment.

Ah, who'm I kidding? I probably will buy the payware one - it does look very nice - but it won't be for a while yet. Actually, my question (aside from 'are there any free ones') is more why there don't seem to be any free ones in the case of this particular aircraft. It's a popular plane, after all; is there some sort of restriction on modelling it?

Have you seen the recently released Short S.45 Solent?

It could be a good alternative to the Catalina.

You might also try this one - made for FS2004 - but perhaps it will work in FSX also:

    Name: spby5a.zip Size: 883,405 Date: 03-22-2004 Downloads: 14,815
FS2004 Consolidated PBY-5A Catalina (updated). The Catalina was a slow lumbering beast in the air. It could be more than a little uncomfortable. But this didn't stop it from becoming the most successful seaplane of all time. Sturdy and reliable it was a welcome sight to anyone stranded at sea. Package includes custom panel. This update includes improvements to the nose turret. By Mike Stone.

Some FS2004 aircraft work well but others require a different panel due to gauge issues.

Still, it might be worth checking out as I, like you, find the Catalina a lot of fun to fly.

    PBY Catalina, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
In 1960, Thomas Kendall, his family, and a photographer from Life magazine set off on a round the world pleasure trip in this Catalina.
On 22nd March they touched down in the Gulf of Aqaba.
The following day they were attacked with automatic gun fire from a headland nearby by local people who had mistaken them for Israeli commandos.
Mr Kendall and his secratary were injured and 4,000 litres of fuel poured onto the sand. After interogation in Jeddah they were all released.

Many aircraft for FS2004 run in FSX , but they have parts no textured, (black) and especially not have the glass in the cockpit. (Just yesterday I tried the "catalina-alphasim virtavia " freeware and is as mentioned above).
If you settle all right, if not, search a plane for fsx.(payware)

There is an Alpha PBY-5 and PBY-5a available now as freeware. I have both. The panel gauges are OK in FSX. Regards, Bob.
