Is it possible to install FS2000 or 2002 Pro with Red Hat Linux as operating system? I am currently using FS2000 on Win98 which works well but i am intrigured with Linux...I have FS 2002 as a XMAS gift which I have not installed yet due to recent marriage and move.

First of all, congrats on your marriage!

As for your question, yes it is possible. You will first need to get Wine from www.winehq.com, which emulates a Windows API layer on top of Linux. That will *theoretically* allow you to run Windows programs on Linux. On top of that, you can install Microsoft Flight Simulator. I have read that FS98 and FS2002 work with Wine, but I'm not sure about FS2002 (although chances are that it should run). I'm not sure how it will perform, though. Sometimes programs run faster with Wine, sometimes they run slower. The best thing to do is to give it a shot.

Let us know how it works out once you try it, if you dont mind. I have a copy of Linux that i was thinkin about putting on one of my machines just to play around with and learn about, it would be pretty cool is fs2k2 ran faster on it!! : )

From my experience with Wine, it didn't work too great with gaming (I tried to run Half Life). The graphics were just horribly choppy and unplayable. BUt then again, could have been my set up.

I highly recommend you set up a dual boot with Win98 and Linux, it isn't too hard to do. SHould just be able to create a new partition and install Windows on it and let Lilo do its thing.

To the best of my knowlege, WINE doesn't emulate Direct X, so I suspect that FS may not work well (if at all). If I thought I could get perfect performance under Linux for FS2002, I'd dump Windows in a heartbeat, but WINE is still ALPHA, last I heard, not even BETA. Should I ever decide to give up FS, my Windows box would become Mandrake, and I'd eliminate the dual boot on my laptop by getting rid of Windows.

Instead of using just Wine (which doesn't "do" DirectX...a M$ developed rendering method), try WineX instead. I don't have a link right now...but a Google search should turn up more info for ya.

I just dropped WineX into my Mandrake install this past weekend, but haven't had a chance to toy with it yet.

But I suspect that you'll get better performance on linux from the FlightGear flightsim. It uses OpenGL for rendering, which is natively supported by most all linux distros now.

Just had linux installed a few dayz ago.,

U cant emulate fs2002 just cauz the fact its direct 3d wine can only do open gl well.. you also have to install drivers for your card..

    SlimDady,

WineX will do Direct3D...so it still might be possible to get an M$FS to run on a linux box. I suspect performance will be pretty lousy though.
