AI and helicopters don't work - True or False

I have tried over fifteen different helicopters - all FS2002 compatible - but none of them work when used in the AI environment. I would have expected them, at least to work as a 'normal' aircraft and take off using the whole runway - but no, they just do not appear in any parking space - large or small.

Has anyone any thoughts or been successful in implementing helicopters into AI?

The only way you would get a chopper to work as AI, would be to give it a fixed wing type airfile. Yhen it would take off and land down the runway, just like any normal fixed wing craft.

thanks for your thoughts, Peter

but do you know what variables need to be changed within the airfile that would allow helicopter characteristics to be maintained but be able to land on a runway. The other thought I had would be to make a pseudo runway using AFCAD and/or create another .bgl file with this pseudo runway and get the AI flight plan to land on this runway - which of couse would only be 45' long - or am I just a bit crazy/creative?

It would just overshoot the runway, Michael. To my knowledge, no one has been able produce a realistic AI helicopter.

sound like this is a serious challenge to the FS developers - or maybe it is too difficult - even for them !!

now that's a challenge to their creative juices!!

If you check out the rotorhead section at avsim, you'll see somebody's done just that. I'm not sure quite how it's been done, but it seems to work.

If you'd like to fly around with helicopters doing what they do naturally flying formation, firing rockets, hover landings etc... Afghan missions is worth a look.
