Thread: GPS Location in an airline cockpit

  1. Default GPS Location in an airline cockpit

If any of you know, where is the gps located in a real-world airline cockpit? You can obviously not get that answer in FSX because when you press the gps button, the gps just appears as a window, but once again, where is that really located? Thanks in advance!

I think it may be on the Flight Management Computer, but I have no real idea.

Most "airliners" don't have a GPS display such as protrayed in FS9/FSX. The G500 is a representative example of a GPS used in smaller, general aviation (private) aircraft.

However, what many folks don't realize is that most FMS/FMC systems have multiple inputs for position data, including GPS (receiver only, no display).

For airliners, GPS is controlled by the Flight Management Computer (FMC). It's the screen beside the throttles with several buttons below it. GPS track is displayed in the Navigation Display (ND). Default FSX panels do not simulate the FMC so that's why they let you open up the Garmin. Not realistic but it does give you some functionality of the FMC.

3rd party add-on planes try to simulate the airliner's FMC to manage the flight plan. Because of this, you won't need to open up the Garmin anymore. This one gives a more realistic feel. FMC also gives you other info like dynamically calculated V-Speeds, estimated fuel consumption, etc...

I think the typical set up is that the MCDU is used to display textual data and make user entries, with the graphical data display on a navigation display (ND) which is the lower or right-side display on the panel.
