Default limit to the number of scenery files?

I HAVE JUST COME ACROSS A PROBLEM WITH A LIMITATION TO THE NUMBER OF SCENERY FILES YOU CAN HAVE.AFTER 332 FILES FS WILL NOT ADD ANYMORE FILES EVEN THOUGH THEY APPEAR IN THE SCENERY CFG. FILE.HAS ANYONE GOT A SOLUTION FOR THIS?

I knew there was a limit but was unsure what it is.

I suspect this will have the same answer as the number of consists in MSTS got from MS - it is a restriction in the software.

I do not believe they thought that sceneries would be so popular. Hopefully something will be done to fix it but probably not until the next version.

Only suggestion I have for you is to experiment a bit. I have tried putting all the sceneries for one Country or region into a single scenery folder and it seems to work just fine. Certainly worth it for all the Alasakan sceneries.

LAST EDITED ON Jun-11-02 AT 05:42AM (EDT)[p]The maximum number of entries allowed in the scenery.cfg file is 331. You idea of grouping area sceneries appears to be the only workable one, Bill.

there's lots to say about grouping together...

first of all you have to examine each and every .bgl, .r8 and .bmp to be sure that each and every file in every add on will have a unique name, or is the same file with the same content.

I made that mistake a while ago when I tried to grup together countries, continents and so on.

after "grouping" for a whole night, I noticed that (for example) wall.bmp or helipad.bmp or airport.bgl was not at all the same file with the same content in separate add ons...

now, what shall I do then?

reminds of "dll-hell" a well known problem in windows environment...

I'll be glad to explain this further on (the add on problem, not the dll-hell problem) if anyone wonders, but in short what I'm trying to say is that every author of add-ons should make sure that every file he uses has a unique name, and that means unique through out all possible add-ons there is, or use shared files, for example files from the "must-have"-section.

an easy way to make them unique is to assign some kind of prefis/suffix, for me that would be la_helipad.bmp or helipad_leif1.bmp or something similar.

    my 2 cents...

I started the combining process last night, and what a hassle. I was wondering how I learn what's the content of these files. Is there a utility for opening them and seeing what's inside?
