Blue Screen With GTX 460

PLEASE, PLEASE somebody help! I'm at my wits end. I've become completely obsessed with FSX over the past few months and as such have spent far more money that I should, or could afford. I decided from the start that I was not going to play around with overclocking or change anything that may compromise the operating system, as I wanted to try and avoid any possible problems (ironic.) As such I have a pretty good rig, Intel i7 950 processor, with 4Gb RAM, 650W power unit, FS running off it's own Sata drive and I have recently upgraded from a Nvidia 9600 GT to the new GTX 460, and here is my problem! I began a flight after having had the new card installed and within one minute of flying the whole thing crashed to a blue screen. I have now uninstalled the driver using a driver clean tool, reinstalled in safe mode and have done this three times and still have not eradicated the problem. I have tried various drivers, including the latest beta driver and that was a joke, simply had no picture to speak of at all! I find it incomprehensible that, bearing in mind that I am not alone, that Nvidia cannot simply offer an explanation which can put an end to this outrage... and I use the word outrage with due consideration, after I've paid £180 for this useless upgrade! Please can someone help...

If you run FSX in the windowed mode, do you still have the same problem?

Hi Bob, thanks for the reply. No, I have been too concerned with chasing drivers etc etc. The computer shop has very kindly taken it back today, the tech there says he has a couple of things he wants to try, but I have to admit at no being over confident. The worrying thing is, as a test, I installed COD modern warfare last night and ran it at it's full resolution and it was fine. Ran FSX and it was the BSOD within about thirty seconds! Sadly, although I'm pretty up together with PC's and able to install, uninstall drivers and OSs etc, I get more than a little lost when I read some of posts in the forums! I run FSX because I enjoy flying and not because I'm interested in tweaking and playing with a PC's innards! LOL If you have any other suggestions, or anyone else has, I am desperate to get to the bottom of things...

I was just wondering if you got the BSOD when running FSX in the windowed mode? If it runs fine in the windowed mode and when you use alt+enter to go to full screen and I assume that's when your GPU would help with the rendering etc. and that would pin the problem down to a conflict with FSX and your GPU. I guess I would try deleted your FSX config file and let it build a new one and it would change your graphics settings to match your new GPU.

Hey, interesting... i have just had the ame thing suggested to me elsewhere. So I have to delete the FSX config file OK. Where will I find this little guy? And is it just a question of deleting it and then restarting FSX or is there somehting more involved? Cheers...

Usually, not always, a BSOD can often be an indication of a hardware issue, not software. It is possible you do not have enough power for the newer video card to run FSX or other high graphic demanding programs. The 650W PSU could be defective or it could be the video card. Sometimes it's a matter of luck finding the problem... The easiest (and cheapest) way to figure out if it is the PSU is to try another PSU, maybe a 700W or higher..If the problem goes away, then you know what it was..Same applies to the video card... This is one of many diagnostic methods and may not necessarly apply to your issue, but any help is better then none.

Hi Awwsky, thanks for the input. The power supply is a TX650/750, unsure which, I will have to wait until I get the kit back later today...

User name/AppData/Roaming/Microsoft/FSX. That's for Vista and W7. I can't remember where for XP. It's worth a try. If your PSU or card were defective you wouldn't have been able to run the other games without a problem I would think.

Hi Bob, is it just a question of finding the file, deleting it and then rebooting?

Yes just delete it and when you start FSX it will build a new one. You will have to into FSX settings to set it up like you want it. No big deal. No need for a reboot.
