  1. Default X-Plane 10: Previews, Videos, News...

    Hi all !

A few weeks ago, Javier Rollon sent a video with his planes. You can watch it here:

You could also see this video that was released during the 2010 AirVenture Oshkosh:

Both videos have been recorded in X-Plane 9 but now, every Tuesday, you can get news about X-Plane 10 here:

Also don't miss Austin Meyer's post here about the internal structure of X-Plane 10:

    Hi all !

The USS Nimitz aircraft carrier from Khamsin will be the default aircraft carrier in X-Plane 10 !

And the "USS Laminar" frigate will also be replaced by Khamsin: the Oliver Hazard Perry-class frigate.

    More about this here:

    More news today:

    X-Plane 10 Delayed

We previously projected that X-Plane 10 would be released in December of 2010. We now know that we won't be able to meet this date and still deliver the simulator that we envision X-Plane 10 to be; in order to meet the standards we have for Version 10, we have to push its release back some number of months. We're working out a new release date now--a date that won't be pushed back again--which we will announce as soon as possible. In the meantime, our development team will continue to work as efficiently as possible on this massive undertaking.

With all the new technologies we're bringing together in X-Plane 10, we believe the new simulator will be a major new landmark in X-Plane's history. We know how eager our fans are to see the finished product, but this delay will ensure that the product you see is one that will elevate X-Plane to an entirely new level.

I prefer them to take more time. X-Plane 9.62 rocks, so waiting longer for a more polished version 10 is not a problem.

    Happy flying.

    Interesting example of software development.

    1) start a project and say "it will take some time, some effort, some money and it should be all set in December 2010"
    2) time passes, effort is put, month by month the release date relentlessly approaches and everything is always "on time, on track, on budget" (*)
    3) a few days before the release date, here comes the Oops: "Gosh - we need a few more months!"

Amazing: certain things will never change...

(*) If I had a dime for every time I've heard that statement, I wouldn't need to work for a living

this looks so promising! I'm very excited I gave up on Microsoft but X Flight was far behind boy it looks amazing now.

A few days before release?? They said it would be ready by late December. We're only in November.

We are at the end of November. Late December means before Christmas otherwise it would be End of December, so we are talking about 15-20 working days left and suddenly the release has been postponed by an "undefined number of months" (2.3, 4 or even more?).

15-20 days before a relatively long release cycle a team is normally doing final system/integration test cycles, not developing. People should be "hands-off the source code" at that time except for bug-fixing activities.

Pushing back 2,3,4 months means to add 20,40,60,80 man days. That is not additional testing/bug-fixing time, but is development time, which means either:

    a) they have taken more time than planned to develop something
    AND/OR
    b) they have announced an impossible release date just to have hype mounting
    AND/OR
    c) they have discovered so many bugs and performances issues that they need a lot more time to take care of them.

Case a) is poor planning and tracking: because you are supposed to track progresses as time goes by. Software project plan are man's made and not God's made. Estimates are adjusted as things get clearer, but you usually do big adjustments at the beginning and smaller adjustments at the end, because you know more.

Case b) is lying to people. I do not want to comment that.

Case c) is poor coding quality. You are supposed to have up to three layers of testing and system/integration test is the final one, you shouldn't have too many surprises at that point in time. If you have, you have overlooked things before.

Either way, like I said, they discovered it quite late. It is not uncommon to have delays in software development projects, as writing software is almost an art and not something schematic such as building as house. However it is extremely unprofessional to discover it at the very last moment.
