    Default Unlimited HMMMMM!

    I have a ASUS G73jh I7 1.6ghz windows 7 ati mobility radeon 5870... what are the pros and cons of doing away a set fps rate and just going for unlimited. Itried it briefly it was originally set at 15 fps and when I changed it to unlimited it jumps up and between 120 down to 50 in heavy populated scenery areas

    No real pros and/or cons - it just depends on your system. On some systems, the jump from 120 to 50 et6c can produce stutters. On others, it's not noticeable. There are some who run limited around cities and unlimited in rural areas with good luck.

    The frame NUMBER is not important - turn OFF the frame counter and change your settings until the system looks good to you. Which would you rather have - 120FPS with stutters and pauses or 15FPS smooth as silk?

    Down to 50 fps in heavy populated areas?!?. I'm running a 3.06 ghz single core with 2 gb ram and can only struggle to get 20 fps tops with frame rate lock on, 10 fps over spokane WA (mid size city). At unlimited the whole fsx is stuttering way too much. From 8 to 70 fps, roller coaster.

    Can you get it steady and stable at 50 fps or does it roller coaster on you?

    The only pros and cons are those pertaining to your system, and your perception. If you're happy with it at unlimited, leave it there. But variable frame rates suggests that your system is placing varying demands on your flight sim and that can't be good for consistency, particularly for behind the scenes processes such as flight modelling and weather, I'd have thought.

    But it's your choice. Plenty of topics around the net on the subject of unlimited fps in FSX.

    I agree, loads of topics and different opinions and settings.
    It's a disgrace to put computer requirements on the box and THINK you have a comp that will run the sim/game very well since your comp has what you would think are far above the minimums posted on the box. Had I known how low the graphics would have to be set, I would have went with FS 2004.

    I have dug around and searched for various tweaks, and no 2 sites seem to agree.

    I have edited my config. Tweaked the trees and buildings down.
    Just yesterday I got nHancer, and it helps my nvidia card do some actual work. (FSX controls for it don't do a thing really)
    Also just got done checking unlimited again and the stutters have stopped, due to a config tweak.
    Changed TEXTURE_BANDWIDTH_MULT=30 to
    TEXTURE_BANDWIDTH_MULT=100
    Smoothed it out. Any higher, and it stutters.

    Try setting it to unlimited in the sim and using an external frame rate limiter. That works well for me. I have it set at 30FPS.

    I also agree that you shouldn't chase FPS. FSX looks a lot nicer at 20FPS than FS9 did. Tune your system with Nick's guides and tweak with Bojote's recommendations http://forum.avsim.net/topic/297361-...k-compilation/
