Thread: FSX Movies in HD

  1. Default FSX Movies in HD

    Greetings!

I want to post two FSX videos that I made. My goal is to make instructional videos for all the learners out there, as there are few good quality videos to find.
The videos will be posted on Learn to Aviate.
The idea is to combine my interest for aviation, flightsim and editing. I'm also a certified flight instructor, so I hope my experience and interest can contribute to the flightsim community.

Until the first instructional video is released, I made a couple of previews to practice making quality flightsim videos. I hope the quality will increase with experience.
Any tips to increase quality or experience is appreciated, especially pointers on content for the instructional videos.

    Enjoy!

A small update on the project: A new domain has been created by the LtA team called www.learntoa.com.

The quality has been increased as well, bumping it up to 1080p (recorded from FS run on actual 1920x1080 resolution) and 30 fps (maximum supported by YouTube). When I say that the quality has increased, please disregard the voice in this video and look at the visuals:

Hope you enjoy it, and I promise even better visuals in the instructional videos.

What recording software did you use? Whenever I use Fraps it cuts my FPS in half. Even when using 720p resolution (I normally run FSX at 1080p). However, when I do use Fraps with other games, I don't have that issue.

When using fraps with FSX you have to match the fps on both programs for smoother recording or you can end up with stutters in your recording. Also make sure the half size box is not ticked and the full size is ticked under the movies tab.

    Default Match Up

You have to match your monitor's 'native res' (ie: Desktop res) and FSX to be the same. If FSX is 1920x1080 and the native res for monitor is 1440x900 then try 1024x768x32 for both. Don't run FSX in 16 bit. 32 or 16 will be 99% the same (when it comes to frames).

Lock FSX at 30 fps. All you need. If you have a sub-par rig (like me) then you cheat. You PLAY FSX at 30 fps. Then switch to unlimited frames for the instant replay (and the Fraps RECORD). Reset to 30 to fly again. Not too much of a chore, I hope. This even helps the sound quality in recordings.

You set Fraps to HALF SIZE (gives you a couple of frames), and 30 fps for recording. Tick 'Don't Sync Sound and Video' (saves you a few frames) and untick 'Lock Frame Rate' (gives you a few frames more). That's how you do it. Well, that's how I do it. Good luck.

Edit: Oh, in videos, my suggestion is to make a BIG DEAL about when and how to use flaps AND PITCH TRIM!! FLAPS & PITCH TRIM! PITCH TRIM. PITCH TRIM. Newbies don't seem to know the technique for these 2 parts (vital for 'successful' flying in the Sim (but maybe not in real life)).

(Edit 2: Nevermind. I just watched your videos. All I see is wrong ('gamer') mentality for teaching me (or anyone else) how to fly IMHO. (I pass on links, too).
